Great combination of features, including a very good 35mm film scanner. Bad news is that a whole set of inks cost about $60, and it doesn't take that long to use the inks up.

Comments about Canon Canon Pixma MP990, Wireless All-In-One Photo Inkjet Printer with USB Interface, 9600 x 2400 dpi Resolution, for Mac & Windows:

I've been using the MP-990 since mid-summer.
PROS
I've used it for ordinary printing, printing decent quality prints on Canon Pro-Platinum paper, copying, and scanning negatives at 4800 dpi and high bit-depth. Given that this is a single piece of relatively inexpensive consumer gear, and not two or three pieces of more expensive, higher quality gear, it provides impressive results across the board. The software package allows quick 'n easy ways of getting decent results, as well as more advanced methods to get better results.
CONS
The most significant downside has been how quickly ink disappears. Are there little sprites in the case siphoning it out? Or has Canon devised a neat way of making ink disappear during the frequent, long sessions of self-cleaning? Ink cartridges cost an average of around $10-$11 and it's surprising how many you go through.
BOTTOM LINE
If you can stand replacing ink cartridges frequently, and the slow, noisy prep sessions, this is a modestly priced unit that delivers surprisingly good results at printing, copying, scanning documents, and doing high-resolution scans of negs and slides.

Comments about Canon Canon Pixma MP990, Wireless All-In-One Photo Inkjet Printer with USB Interface, 9600 x 2400 dpi Resolution, for Mac & Windows:

The printer goes through all kinds of gyrations before it prints, presumably to clean the print heads. Once it actually starts printing, it's very fast. The quality is excellent, both for black and white documents and color photographs.

I find the menu-driven operation cumbersome. Since this is a printer, one would think most people would be printing, either photos or documents, and functions like Copy or Scan need not be quite as accessible. The print screen, however, is part of Settings, which is buried in the middle of the menu. Once Settings is selected, it is easy to alternate between the cassette and the rear tray for your paper feed.

The printer doesn't scan to the computer wirelessly. It only scans to your computer if the two are physically connected by USB cable. I scan to a thumb drive but connecting that is a pain since my printer is on a low pull-out shelf and the USB port is hard to see. Of course, this could easily be resolved if the printer was on the desktop.

Setup on a Mac was easy. There is a Solution Menu for printing photos, which is good because that page setup wasn't quite as easy.

While the unit has a compact design, it still has a fairly large footprint. I had measured in advance and it does fit in my printer compartment, but barely. Because you open the top to copy, scan or change ink, I made room by removing the upper shelf where the fax used to be.

Lastly, it seems to be a bit of an ink guzzler. I haven't done that much printing in the short time I've had it, and only a few photos, but already I've replaced the large black ink tank and the other ink tanks won't be far behind. I'm wondering how much ink is lost through the automatic print head cleaning.

Overall I like the printer, especially the wireless function. I am impressed with the print quality. It's also nice to finally have a functional scanner and copier.

Comments about Canon Canon Pixma MP990, Wireless All-In-One Photo Inkjet Printer with USB Interface, 9600 x 2400 dpi Resolution, for Mac & Windows:

After previously owning two Epson printers, both of which died by jamming, I bought the Canon when it was on sale right before Christmas 2009. Set up was easy: it took me about 45 minutes to go from the box to printing photos. Its footprint is not much bigger than that of my previous printers.

So far I've printed almost 100 4x6 photos and a few documents with it. My fiancee was printing photos in no time once I showed her how to print by inserting the SD card from her camera.

The photo quality is good. I don't know about the archival quality of the photos, so I handle them gently. Canon warns to let the photos dry for 24 hours after printing and to always keep them out of direct light and away from moisture. (Maybe I should display the photos in a closet full of dessicant?) I also love the scanner, which scans slides and strips of film (35mm only) quickly, although it only saves the files as jpegs.

There are a few drawbacks. If you're not going to go wireless, you'll need to buy a separate USB cable. Also, the image shown on the screen when printing from a memory card is in a 4x5/8x10 ratio, so if you're printing on 4x6 or 5x7 paper, keep in mind that some of the image will be cropped. I had to call Canon tech. support to find out where they hid the templates for scanning slides and film. It's hidden under the platen on the copier/scanner lid. I never would have found them had I not called. The gray ink cartridge ran low long before the others, and unfortunately it's the one ink cartridge that the computer and home office stores don't seem to carry in the store. It is available online, of course. The skin tones from photos of people were too red, but that's probably more a function of the color set up on my new camera, not the printer. Finally, I'd like the scanner to be able to scan medium and large format film.

Over all I would highly recommend this printer/scanner/copier, especially for the price. Someday I'll move up to one of the Canon pro printers, but this will do fine for now.

Comments about Canon Canon Pixma MP990, Wireless All-In-One Photo Inkjet Printer with USB Interface, 9600 x 2400 dpi Resolution, for Mac & Windows:

This replaced our Pixma MP830. We wanted to use the wireless feature and the capability to scan film negatives. The wireless feature was set up quickly, and it is great to be able to print from all around the house wirelessly. We loved the MP830 and the 990 seems to be a nice upgrade from that one!
