I use the P-5000 rather than a PC when traveling. Downloads are fast enough and playback is OK. The screen quality is excellent. Photos are clear and bright with good resolution and color. I don't like the text based interface, but it's not a deal breaker. I also download movies and watch them when flying etc. Video playback is very good though you will need earphones as the speaker is anemic. I get two+ hours of battery life when watching video.

This is great! I can take my pic's anywhere. The large screen is very clear and easy to veiw. Works great for my older relatives who have trouble with the smaller digital camara screens. I love that I can "share" pic's easily with other flashdrives and computers.

I purchased the Epson P-5000 primarily for use as a portable storage device for my digital photos on lengthy vacations and when photographing weddings. It has slots for both SD and CF memory cards. The Epson does an exceptional job of backing up digital images (in all formats a photographer could ever want, including proprietary RAW formats) and displaying them for review. The screen is remarkably crisp and bright, giving you an impressive view of the photos you have just taken.

The Epson has easy to navigate menus and intuitive features. It also clearly displays the size of each memory card back-up, allowing you to ensure that the full card has been transferred.

As a bonus for me, the Epson served as entertainment on my long trip, allowing me to watch videos on the way. On a full battery charge, I was able to get a solid 3 and a half hours of viewing (5 TV episodes, sans commercials). The only con I could think of is that the screen is pretty reflective, making viewing in very bright light slightly difficult. The Epson does feature brightness levels from 1-10 for the viewer to choose from, which helps to compensate for the bright ambient light. In most situations, I left my brightness setting on 5 and found that my photos/shows were displayed as bright as I would want them to be.

This product is highly recommended!

All that they claim, and then some!

My P-4000 has been a rugged, dependable tool with an outstanding viewing screen, but the P-5000 has improved on it's predecessor's shortcomings. The time to load a file onto the screen and data download/upload from a CF card have all been drasticly reduced, while the image quality is rivaled only by full size monitors. It's the next best thing to having a laptop for nearly immediate review of your shots, but in a considerably more compact unit, not to mention 80 Gigs of backup storage capacity. I can't be without one. And if they ever add tethered download capability direct from a DSLR, I'll just have to upgrade.

Terrific device to store your pictures.

I bought this to take on vacation because I didn't want to take a laptop because it wouldn't fit in a hotel safe with my lenses and I'd worry about it being stolen. I also planned on taking a lot of pictures and even though I have an 8GB card and two 2GB cards, I figured I needed more storage.

Before leaving on our trip, my son record a ton of music and 3 movies on it. We didn't watch the movie but my wife listened to the music for hours.

I shoot with a Canon 30D in RAW and this is one of the few devices that allow you to view your pictures in that format. It's a great device and allows you to review your pictures much better than on the camera. It also allows you to review them on a TV. It met all my needs and I highly recommend it.

I fly to the South Pacific many times a year for underwater photo shoots. This device allows me to store 3 or 4 days worth of hard shooting, plus it alows me to load and view a movie or two of my own to watch on the flight over. Pretty much eliminates the need of traveling w/ a laptop, as I do all my post back home. Do yourself a favor and buy the 80gb model, its double the storage of the p-3000 for a couple hundred more, worth it if you are more than just a casual shooter while traveling.
