I bought this a year ago and since then have used it numerous times traveling. I looked at both the messenger and the back pack in the Gen-3 series, and thought this might have been a little bit better, boy was I wrong!! By the time you cram a laptop and camera gear in this bag it weighs a ton, and then to have to haul this thing around in an airport for plane transfers is a nightmare(It kills my back). It's never once fit into and over head compartment, and only fit under the seat in front of me if I turned it on it's back. It does fit all my gear nicely, but at what cost. My back gets all out of whack trying to haul this thing around, and it's just plain awkward and painful. This might work great if you just used this to house your gear in your car while you travel, but if you're having to hold the bag for long period of time I highly suggest looking else where!! I'll never buy another messenger for my photo gear again. If you're trying to decide between this one and the back pack, go with the back pack. It's nice that you can fit all your gear in the bag safely, and securely, but I promise it's more painful that functional. This isn't anything against Tenba they make great bags, but this bag just doesn't cut it for the cost!! The shoulder strap needs to be looked at again, more padding, and some sort of weight management needs to looked at. It just gets way to heavy for that horrible little strap!! I'm looking into a ThinkTank backpack for a replacement!! Hope this helps
