It should go without saying that every lens should have a filter on it for protection. However if you have a good lens you don't want to put a so so filter on it. Over the years I have done a great deal of research before acquiring a lens. So I want only the best filters to go in front of those lenses. Thus I get B+W filters, they are simply the best.

I use this filter off and on to protect my Canon 35mm f/1.4 lens. No complaints whatsoever - it is a very good filter, offering no visible effect on the image.

Quite some time ago while I was considering a Nikon D200, then a D300, (but more recently -- and I'm glad I procrastinated, purchased the Nikon D90!), I purchased a fairly inexpensive set of 3 standard Merkury filters, mostly for lens protection and some UV and haze reduction. HUGE mistake! You get what you pay for. No multi-coating, either. The fit on the Nikon 18-200mm zoom was very good. Problem is: the filter simply did not work. Oh, I got great "effects" from the cheap filter, but it did not perform the way I expected it too. After much more research, and better educating myself concerning the purpose and proper use of a UV filter, I decided on this B+W filter. It arrived today. I tried it out both in full sunshine and lunar pics this evening. I couldn't be happier with the results. Finally, no haze, ghosting, glare, etc. It just quietly and unobtrusively goes about its business of doing what it is supposed to do. I know B+W is a top of the line manufacturer. Another case of "you get what you pay for". The multi-coating is applied to BOTH sides of the glass. Now, it does make it a bit harder to keep smudge-free when having to clean the lens, but this is to be expected when dealing with multi-coatings. It cannot be avoided. Diligent and careful cleaning will yield excellent results. Plus, if you leave the filter on the lens -- as I plan to do -- then you really only have to deal with occasionally cleaning just one glass surface. Moreover, you get an additional FUNCTIONAL "layer" of protection for your expensive lens. Bottom line: You have an investment in your lens which is really at least as important as your camera; and, the results obtained with your lens are only limited by the quality of the filter you place in front of it -- everything else being equal. It is NOT worth skimping on the filter. You know the expression about being penny wise and pound foolish. Do NOT it! Make the proper investment NOW and avoid disappointment.

I have these filters on all my lenses, they're easy to clean and I can't see any real degradation to image quality.

I originally ordered the Canon UV filters for my lenses and quickly realized that the quality was sub par. After researching, I decided on the B&W multi coated UV filters. After receiving the first one, I ordered new ones for each of my lenses. They have a nice quality feel to them.
