Relatively thin profile works well, although you can still get some vignetting in some situations. This works with the "Bigma" (Sigma 50-500mm) which I was concerned about because the Bigma specifies a "coarse" thread.

The first filter on my lenses is a UV, providing filtration of UV rays while also providing protection for an expensive lens. Spend the money even if you have, as I do, a difficult lens diameter to deal with [...]. UV filters represent common sense & money wisely invested.
