Filters are often regarded as simple after-thoughts, but they can and will degrade results if the are not up to the quality of the lens they are mounted on. Nikon filters are top rate, and also very slim, making them an excellent choice fo use on wide angle lenses.

Why spend this kind of money for a clear piece of glass? Well, I just spent a bundle on this beautiful 60 mm AFS Nikon Micro lens and I wanted to protect the front glass of the lens and still get undistorted pictures in challenging light situations. Does it work? Is it worth the extra $$$? Let me just tell you that the cheaper filters caused all sorts of distortion and double images especially with my nightscapes. I have seen none of that with this piece. If you buy an expensive lens, don't cheat yourself by putting inferior optics in front of it.

Nikon continues to produce quality products at a reasonable price. If taken care of, this filter should last as long as the lens that it protects.
