Not bad for the price
By Light and ImagesVerified Reviewer from Orange, CA on 2/1/2008
Pros:
Durable, Long-Lasting
Cons:
Weak
Best Uses:
General Use
Describe Yourself:
Hobbyist/Enthusiast
Bottom Line:
Yes, I would recommend this to a friend

I bought this based on other people and the price. And for the price, it's not too bad. The stands are riveted so they get loose over time, there is not any way to tighten them. The stand locks are not bad, but no aircushions. The weakest part is how they attach the cross beam to the tops of the stands. A simple peg and slot arrangement which would have fine it were of better tolerances. On the other hand, it does work well enough with my fleece and muslin backgrounds. The travel bag is crude at best. But, again, for the price it works well enough. This is excellent for a start rig with the expectation to replace it in a year or two depending on use and expertise.

Good Value Stand
By Pixel PeteVerified Purchaser from Hartford, CT on 1/21/2008
Pros:
Good Color Value
Cons:
Weak
Best Uses:
Indoors
Describe Yourself:
Professional
Bottom Line:
Yes, I would recommend this to a friend

It's a good value background stand. Is light, compact, and comes with a handy carrying case. The cross bar is the weakest link but it will hold as long as you don't abuse it. No air cushions so make sure the extensions are lock down right. Its built for portability not a last forever studio stand. But I'm still happy with it.

Okay - could be stronger
By davis_missionVerified Purchaser from Olean, NY on 5/8/2007

Pros:
Easy To Use, Lightweight
Cons:
light for the job - bows
Best Uses:
with light curtain
Bottom Line:
Yes, I would recommend this to a friend

I think with a very light curtain it is probably good - mine has some weight and it bows the middle - so you have to lift it higher and then the sides don't touch the ground. But it is nice and very easy to use.

Not the best but does the job.
By AnyoneVerified Purchaser from Orange County, California on 2/15/2007
Describe Yourself:
Hobbyist/Enthusiast
Pros:
Affortable, Portable
Cons:
No air damping, Poor carrying bag design
Best Uses:
Portable studio, Portrait Photography
Bottom Line:
No, I would not recommend this to a friend

Overall the product does what it is intended to do which is a convenient and portable way of holding a back drop. It lack air cushioning so watch out when you loosen the tension knobs. The stand will come crashing down if you're not paying attention. Also, the lock for the legs pinches the tube making it difficult to extend the poles when the leg are locked. I've used a friends lower cost JTL system and it was much better designed. I would not reccomend the Photek system.

backgound stand

Describe Yourself:

Pros:
Compact, Lightweight
Cons:
non-steady base, Weak Construction
Best Uses:

Bottom Line:
No, I would not recommend this to a friend

I have had the system fall over once and had a few other times it almost came down due to the construction of the legs or the weight of the system.

Very portable unit
By Capricorn FotoVerified Purchaser from Fremont, CA on 2/12/2007
Describe Yourself:
Professional
Pros:
Lightweight
Cons:
Sharp pole extnsion edges
Best Uses:
Photography
Bottom Line:
Yes, I would recommend this to a friend

Good initial investment. It does the job but it does not expand wide enough to support 20x20 or larger backgrounds. Kit does not include sandbags which are very essential to keeping these stable and safe. Sometimes, C-Stands are better and are more durable but for simple work, this kit is fine. I would use caution when handling the edges of the connecting poles. They are sharp and can cut you like a knife.

A useful system with slight design flaw
By Jim [...]Verified Purchaser from Concord NH on 2/12/2007
Describe Yourself:
Semi-professional
Pros:
Fast set up, Lightweight
Cons:
Weak Construction
Best Uses:
Photography
Bottom Line:
Yes, I would recommend this to a friend

I use this system quite frequently to display quilts for photography for The Quilter magazine.
It is quite portable and fast and easy to set up, light to carry and generally strong enough to support heavy quilts. Early on the pegs at the top which hold the cross brace broke requiring me to redrill the hole and install a peg made of a sturdier metal, and glue using a metal epoxy. These pegs were made of a cheap pot metal. Even though the some of the quilts are quite heavy, they are probably not heavier than a roll of background fabric. The price was right and I would recommend this to someone handy enough to do a minor repair to strengthen the product.

Works great
By Marv from Florida on 8/31/2006

I really like this setup. It holds up a muslin backdrop without any problems. The adjustable height is nice for lower areas.

The only con I can find is that the main support bar is held together, once assymbled, by allen screws, which require a wrench to turn. I would have rather had push button or turn to lock type things.

Solid Product
By CreativesifuVerified Reviewer from Prattville, AL (Shaolin Temple) on 8/22/2006
Pros:
High quality bag, Lightweight

I have been very happy with this purchase. I can truthfully say it has made me thousands of dollars at the nightclubs I shoot at. Leg and support got bent out of place by drunk customer, I thought was ruined. Wrong, just bent back into place still works as good as before.
