Comments about Canon Canon Speedlite 580EX II, Shoe Mount Flash with Guide Number of 190 Feet / 58m at ISO 100:

I bought this unit at the Photo expo in NYC. I had really hoped to report it was a great flash but sadly it is not In program mode it will only shoot with lens wide open. It is acceptable for outdoor fill flash but the pop up flash will work almost as well. It is not a good flash for indoor work. It is way underpowered for professional applications. Using a Gary fong diffuser it loses at least 2 stops and when I compensate by opening up by 1 or 2 stops it still is underexposing. The manual is poorly written and explains little to help with problems I have found with the flash. Canon's camera's and lenses are first rate sad to say this flash is not. I will go back to using my old sunpak 522 for any serious work and just use this unit for less important flash fill work. It costs to much for what it is capable of

Comments about Canon Canon Speedlite 580EX II, Shoe Mount Flash with Guide Number of 190 Feet / 58m at ISO 100:

Aside from having a higher guide number than the other Canon flashes, this flash allows stop adjustments from 1 to 1/128 in 1/3 increments and can act as a Master to trigger my 420. This allows me a lot of creative opportunities that I did not have with my 420 alone.

The flash output is consistent and and recycle time is fast. I'd recommend the 580EX II to anyone looking for consistent control during their flash photography sessions.

Comments about Canon Canon Speedlite 580EX II, Shoe Mount Flash with Guide Number of 190 Feet / 58m at ISO 100:

I am not at all satisfied with my 580exll.
I will be taking pic. and for no reason the pic.
will be at least 2-stops overexposed, this will
go on for app. 4to5 pic. then it will be ok for
8to10 pic. then back to overexposure. I know of
5 other people that are having the same problem.
Talked to canon, they said they had not heard of
the problem. Any suggestions.

Comments about Canon Canon Speedlite 580EX II, Shoe Mount Flash with Guide Number of 190 Feet / 58m at ISO 100:

I purchased this unit in May and wanted to run it through a number of my typical wedding weekends before reviewing, so here goes. This flash has been a very dependable unit, however I have overheated it the last three weekends shooting weddings. Weddings are fast paced, and I generally shoot 900-2000 images per wedding, depending on the number of hours I'm hired. The unit will change from ETTL to TTL when it gets hot and your next image will be blown out. After searching the manual there is only a cautionary statement on pg 7. "To avoid overheating, do not fire more than 20 continuous flashes, allow a rest of 10 min." I keep a close watch on the display and have my backup near. I get quite a bit more than Canon's 20 continuous flashes before the overheating happens. It usually happens when I am shooting the posed formals after the ceremony. Maybe Canon's next upgrade will include a thermometer on the display so you can visually see when you are close to overheating.

I like this product but I hate the menus. Who ever was designing this product did not put much effort or thought into making it simple. I feel like I'm expected to already know a lot about flash to be able to use this product. I understand that it is intended for professionals but I think that a good simple design would benefit pros and amateurs alike.

Comments about Canon Canon Speedlite 580EX II, Shoe Mount Flash with Guide Number of 190 Feet / 58m at ISO 100:

Just added a couple more of these fine tools to me arsenal. A fine thing, these little flashers!
I did a bit of looking at alternate flashes, cause Canon ( & any name brand, seems like) does like to charge their premo prices. Yep, there are cheaper flashes twill do the same job, ( for the most part) but you will loose the Ettl bits, and the ability to control the flash thru your Canon camera screen. ( Which is way nice at times! )

I put out the extra cheese for these,as I wanted ease of use between the flash/cam, and that nice recycle (1 second..even faster should you attach the external batter pack to em) just watch it then as you could easily overheat & fry your flash head if you don't let it cool a bit between too many shots!

Good: Very fast recycling rate, even at full bore.
Easily controlled thru the higher end Canon cameras lcd screen.

can easily switch settings/power/slave/master bits. (May take you a couple times of practise, and keep the manual handy for the first while, but I had the hang of it within the hour)

Bad: Line of sight only when using slaves. ( Recommend acquiring RadioPoppers for shooting around corners, ect.)

Also bad (Correct me if I missed it) but they don't seem to be light sensitive,so if you are planning to fire them thru a daisy chain of bounce light,,oh well...( Gotta line o sight em, or get Radiopoppers, pocket wizards, ect.)
Kinda sucks for times when you just want to keep it simple & bounce light from one to the next.
(This also means you will need a cable to connect one of them to your camera, unless you use the Canon commander unit)

Extra Notes: Be sure if you are shooting with a single unit (After using it as a Master) to turn off the master setting. Otherwise, you will find the recycle time goes up to bout 2 /2.5 seconds
I believe it takes longer as it is trying to send the signals out to the slaves ( which are no longer there)
When this first happened, I was worried I had a bad set of batteries, but once I turned the master option back off, all was ok, and I had my 1 second recycle back.

Get yourself rechargable batteries for this thing, as it will eat them alive! ( I use Powerex & Energizer AAs, with quick chargers )

Also, I suggest putting on a diffuser of some sort, unless you like that hard "Nuke" light.
I use a Westcott micro apollo when traveling light, and the Photoflex LiteDome xs Kit mounted on a Custom Brackets Junior, when I have the time to travel slower and want a wider diffusion of light. ( The PF xs is nice, but it is a bit unwieldy at times, especially if you are in a crowd!

I highly suggest reading "The Hot shoe Diaries" by Joe Mcnally to see just what can be done with these small flashes ( He uses Nikon product, but the teaching works for all brands)

This is a great product with just one flaw as I see it... I really don't like the switch turning the unit on and off. Pulling a switch lever down to turn it on is just the reverse of what I would expect so to make it easier to read I painted the indented line on the switch white making it more legible.

Comments about Canon Canon Speedlite 580EX II, Shoe Mount Flash with Guide Number of 190 Feet / 58m at ISO 100:

I just bought this shoe mount flash since the flash on the Canon EOS Rebel XSI isn't adequate. This flash does the job and makes such a difference in my pictures for fill in flash and also when taking pictures where there isn't adequate lighting. It is bulky and it does add some noticable weight to the camera, however, I think the positives outweigh this negative aspect.

I have used the 580EX for years with my Canon 20D, to provide fill flash (with a diffuser) for almost everything. I have recently upgraded to the 5D, which doesn't have a built in flash, along with the 580EX II. Couldn't live without it to control overal lighting, but a difuser is a must to provide a soft and more natural effect. I do wish however that there was a better solution than using an extension bracket for fill flash when shooting portraits vertically.

You can't have a good picture without good lighting and this is definitely capable of giving you the lighting you need on the go. I use this a lot at a summer camp taking portraits and general shots around campus. Instead of carrying bulky studio lights around and setting them up to get angled lighting just bounce the flash off a nearby wall. Also the recycle time is pretty fast with my NiMH batteries when I do burst shots with my Canon 40D. The flash can keep up with my camera's 6.5 fps. Definitely worth investing in one of these.

I wasted about a year using a much cheaper brand because I thought it was too expensive. All I can say is if you don't have the cash for the 580ex II then borrow it. Has changed my shots 180 degrees, the flash is right on everytime. The options have allowed me to be creative and has basically gotten me more work. Get it, Get it, Get it.

This unit appears to be built a little tougher then the original 580EX. Results with the 5d appear a little more consistent then with the original 580. I also like that it has a pc connection for using with pocket wizards. The 580EX was missing that.

Comments about Canon Canon Speedlite 580EX II, Shoe Mount Flash with Guide Number of 190 Feet / 58m at ISO 100:

I have been shooting as a hobbyist for almost a year. I'm not practiced enough to tell you any of the tech specs of the speedflash, but I can tell you that it has made a tremendous difference in exposures of my shots. I feel confident taking pictures in any light condition even pitch black and knowing that They'll come out just fine. I haven't even made it halfway through the instruction book for this flash, so I know there's going to be lots more fun stuff to learn that'll keep me busy for months to come.
the 580EX II was a little expensive especially for my first flash, but I planned on only buying one flash and being done with it. This unit was made by Canon for Canon cameras and the reviews from the pros seemed reasonably good. At the time of purchase, it was considered top of the line, so the decision was easy. So far, I am not disappointed in the least with this flash unit!

Comments about Canon Canon Speedlite 580EX II, Shoe Mount Flash with Guide Number of 190 Feet / 58m at ISO 100:

This is a perfect compliment to your Canon camera. I made the mistake of starting out on the inexpensive side with a 430 EX. It is a great flash, but this one does so much more, and better. Now that I have both I am starting to enjoy the many creative ways that there is to light subjects. The fact that the flash will meter the light using both flashes and transmit the data to the 430 wirelessly makes for some impressive images without any fussing around with experimental settings. If you have a perfectionist side that is discriminating and hard to please like me, this flash unit will satisfy your needs.

Comments about Canon Canon Speedlite 580EX II, Shoe Mount Flash with Guide Number of 190 Feet / 58m at ISO 100:

This is a great professional flash!!! Power consumption is great. Around 300 flashes per set of 4 AA 2700 mil amp batteries. Of course this flash count is subject to change depending on how you have the flash set. My only gripe is the mechanics of how the flash is built internally; locking the position (Angle) of the flash head. I bumped it once (And not very hard) and now it seems a little wanky. The lock for the flash is probably made of plastic and should be metal (Take note Canon). But aside from that, the flash is fantastic!!! Solid shoe mount base with lock, great output, and low battery consumption. What else can you ask for?

Comments about Canon Canon Speedlite 580EX II, Shoe Mount Flash with Guide Number of 190 Feet / 58m at ISO 100:

I've had this new flash for only a short time, but have used it extensively in fill light situations - sunny skies and deep shadows. I specifically like that it is easy to use and very accurate. I also like the ability to step the fill amount down or up at will, more effectively getting the fill results desired. I often use a Light Sphere attachment, which works very well with this unit. So far, my shooting with this flash has been in quickly changing situations, with people in public places. In most of the photos, the fill effect is not obvious, but very effective. If I don't like the amount - say, too much - I simply step the amount down one or two stops and fire again. Very nice piece of equipment.

Great flash, has every possible setting you could imagine. Unfortunately, with that comes its huge size and weight. You can also only use this or the ST-E2 as a master for Canon's wireless off camera flash system. However, I use Alien Bee's cybersyncs which are more inexpensive, reliable, and work at up to 10x the distance. No TTL of course, but I've never been happy with the inconsistent results of Canon's ETTL. I only nicked it for its high price and bulk.

Comments about Canon Canon Speedlite 580EX II, Shoe Mount Flash with Guide Number of 190 Feet / 58m at ISO 100:

This is the most powerful hot shoe flash unit available for the Canon. The diffuser is a great feature for softening the output. I run the flash with a -2/3 stop output to cut down on harsh shadows. Fast recycle time but can go through a set of rechargeable NiMH AA batteries if using repetitive flash. It's a little bulky and heavy especially when using the Canon EF 24-70mm f2.8 lens but the result is excellent. Indent button to move head is cumbersome.

Comments about Canon Canon Speedlite 580EX II, Shoe Mount Flash with Guide Number of 190 Feet / 58m at ISO 100:

Ok. For the most part I take shots of friends and family. Trying to get a portable studio set up so I can try and get some better people shots. I was using a 430EX ad added this flash to my bag. It took me about 50 snaps before I got sue to how the light went from this larger unit. The flash is awesome. Does everything it should and more. I have this as my main and the 430 as a 2nd flash on a stand bouncing off something and I can get some pretty good shots.Anyhow I’m far from a pro, but if you have the cash and looking for Canon big boy grab this. A used 580EX or 550EX is another good option. Bottom [$] this is a great flash unit. But be aware there are other cheaper options if money is an issue.

I rated it as excelent however I can't compair it to other flashes. I've had great success with Canon cameras and equipment. I've used a film SLR camera for 38 years but I'm new to Digital SLR photography. I am gaining knowledge every time I use the cameras and flash, I read the manual which is easy to understand thank goodness because there are too many features and settings to retain in the gray matter. This flash provides ample light for inside photos a big improvement over the Canon XSI built in flash.

Comments about Canon Canon Speedlite 580EX II, Shoe Mount Flash with Guide Number of 190 Feet / 58m at ISO 100:

Phenomenal flash. I had one, purchased another one and I am really happy with them. Three comments:

1). Right out of the box when used with my 5D the flash produces a noticeable reddish cast, especially well pronounced on skin and faces. This has to be corrected manually when converting your RAW files. Another option would be to design your custom Picture Style and apply it to your images. It would have been nice not to have to deal with these issues.

2). The menus could have been designed a bit better - I'd like them to be a bit more intuitive (but this is just me).

3). When trying to synchronize two 580EX II flashes the Master has to be attached to the camera. If it isn't, the Slave will fire with approx. 1 sec. delay. While being a smart feature, this is not well documented and could be a bit frustrating.

Other than that I LOVE my flashes. Extremely versatile, lightweight and relatively easy to work with.

Like nearly all Canon products it is well worth the price if you are even half-way serious about getting the most from your Canon EOS. My 50D takes photography to a whole new level and the Speedlite 580EX II only makes it better, plus you can't beat the great deals [...]. I've lost track of all I've bought from them and never been disappointed.

Comments about Canon Canon Speedlite 580EX II, Shoe Mount Flash with Guide Number of 190 Feet / 58m at ISO 100:

Likely, when I put my nose to the grind, figure out all the settings and uses, I'll love it. I bought it because my indoor shots, especially of my dark skinned son-in-law and his family were too dark and their faces weren't showing up right with the white members of the inter-racial family. I had bought this great Canon Rebel XSi and the flash attached to the camera just didn't cut it. The shoe mount flash attaches easily.

"Canon's flagship" Highly versitile flash. Both ETTL and manual settings are user friendly. Master slave options are cool for stobists. I wish Canon cameras had integrated wireless ETTL off-camera Flash capabilities. A second flash or comander unit is currently requied, to trigger wireless, off -camera flash in ETTL mode.

Comments about Canon Canon Speedlite 580EX II, Shoe Mount Flash with Guide Number of 190 Feet / 58m at ISO 100:

As powerful as a small studio strobe in a much smaller enclosure. The weather-sealing does work and resisted a medium rain. Recycling is quite fast and absolutely silent which is a pro and a con. I like the audible feedback so I know when it´s recycling without seeing the ready light.

As some have commented the slave/master switch in the old version was better for speed and work-flow.

Canon needs to get a wireless transmitter in the bodies so you don´t have to get the small ST-E2 which uses non rechargeable batteries.

The stroboscopic feature works very well but will reduce the life of the lamp so use with caution and sparingly.

Overall a great flash and the best companion to the 430EX.

I use this with my 5D MK II and 50D. Mainly for outdoor wedding party flash fill. It is great with high speed sync when I want to throw a background out of focus by using a fast lens wide open. I also use it indoors with a 550 and 420 as slaves. Outdoors they don't slave well but work with radio poppers. I also use Quantums with freeXwire transmitters and receivers outside.

I took a class for indoor portraits and not being able to afford the big strobes, I started out with one 580 EXII, which quickly led to the purchase of another, and in order to get enough background light, my husband bought me one more for Christmas. I love them for doing portrait work with shoot thru umbrellas. I am still learning how to get the right output when it is on camera. It does burn through batteries pretty quickly and as the power from the batteries diminish, the recycle time takes a bit longer which can be frustrating with little kids.

I've just upgraded from a Sigma EF-500 DG ST (non-LCD back)and I find that this is much more versatile since the camera can communicate more information to the flash. I can also override the cameras FEC +3/-3 stops vs my cameras +2/-2 and my very limited Mh/Ml on my Sigma Flash. Can't find any negatives about this flash as I'm not an expert review but can only compare it to what I've already used and therefore feel that this is a well worth investment.

Ok, the 580EXII is a monster - it is a lot heavier than the 430 flash and a fair bit bigger. This should be expected - it delivers a lot more light too... GN58 vs GN43 translates to an 80% increase in the peak brightness. It's up to the buyer to decide whether the increased range versatility warrants the price difference....

Comments about Canon Canon Speedlite 580EX II, Shoe Mount Flash with Guide Number of 190 Feet / 58m at ISO 100:

This item is really my first experience with flash. (I do nt include much earlier experiments with a manual Vivitar flash/film camera combo, or the on-camera flash of the 30D). I wanted to start doing off-camera flash shooting a la Strobist. Although he recommends using the old manual Vivitar and Metz' and so forth, I wanted a really robust strobe with advanced features, such as quick recycling, hi-speed strobe, and a high power output. I also like the Canon Speedlight system for controlling multiple flash units - the only downside of that is using Infrared to communicate between the flashes. If these worked exactly the same way, but with RF instead, I think they wuld be very popular, eliminating the need for 3rd-party accessories like RadioPoppers or PocketWizards.
I was disappointed to discover that with 2 of these, I could not use Master/Slave with both units off-camera, unless I had the short Canon Off-Camera shoe cord, or invested in Radio Wireless Transmitters. Using the PC socket will only allow you to sync one flash to the camera. That was a bummer. In order to do what I really want (fire both flashes off-camera), it looks like I will need an ST-E2, and most likely, a set of Radio Poppers to increase reliability of the questionable Canon IR system. Considering the price of the 580EX II, this is a negative, and explains why people interested in off-camera flash are not choosing this product.
I would recommend this with caveats.
Also, in order to really wrap my head around the functions, I got an instructional DVD and just played with it a lot. I thought the user manual was pretty lacking.

Remember to use the exposure comp - for dark subjects and + for light subjects and then let the flash and camera do the work on Program. Very consistent, almost idiot proof once you learn your settings. Make sure that you do alot of experimenting with it before a major shoot, because it won't let you down but you can let yourself down.

I bought this flash to compliment my 430ex and command it as a slave to be part of a mobile studio setup. I've been extremely happy with the 580exii for its power and features. Amateurs be warned, this is not a small or light flash unit, but it performs. Over the 430ex, this is more powerful, has a metal foot, and can command slave flashes via IR. If you're looking for a smaller, lighter solution, the forthcoming 430exii might be a better option, but if you need a powerful flash with great features and excellent controls, this is an excellent option, despite its rather high price.

This flash replaced my 550EX which was a very good flash but a little slow to recycle. Started to shoot many large room (gymnasiam) scenes with lots of movement and the greater output is a nice bonus as is the added functionality with the 1Ds Mark III. Much easier to mount on the camera and the head that rotates both directions by pressing a single button is great for going from landscape to portrait mode.

Comments about Canon Canon Speedlite 580EX II, Shoe Mount Flash with Guide Number of 190 Feet / 58m at ISO 100:

I bought the 580EX II, as a companion to my 580EX. I wanted to experiment with remote flash photography using ratio's ect. The Flash has many improvements over the 580EX. The ones I like best are the faster recycle time, the Battery Cover locks, and is better designed than with the 580EX. The Metal Hotshoe is nice, as well as the Flashes locking mechanism, instead of the lock-ring the older flash has. I have a Sto-Fen Omni Bounce for the 580 EX, and it doesn't quite fit the 580EX II, since the 580EX II is slightly larger. (pictures enclosed). I suppose I could jam it on, but I think that would damage the dust resistant seam. Fortunately I also purchased Gary Fongs Lightsphere Cloud, which fits snug.
This is an excellent Flash unit, but if you decide to upgrade from the 580EX, keep in mind, you may have a problem with your old diffuser fitting the new flash.

I'd been using a Speedlite 420EX and was quite unsatisfied with the results, so I thought I'd try the 580EX. It works so much more reliably that I only wish I bought it sooner. The coverage of subjects is much better, from wide angle (with its dispersion panel) to longer range shots. The manual is worth noting as far better than the 420EX, which I found fairly useless. The 580EX manual clearly describes each of its many features, encouraging me to experiment more. Overall while it is more expensive, the added overall quality is well worth it.

I do a lot of low light photography under rapidly changing conditions like special effect stage lighting. The Canon Speedlite 580 has all the conceivable controls and most of them are useless under fire. The field of flash driven by the camera lens focal length is a somewhat useful feature. However, many times I do not want to flash the entire field of view but just the center. I would like to see a pro flash with a single manual lever with two degrees of freedom; one to control field of flash and one to control the power of the flash.

I found this flash to work quite well in poorly lit short range portrait environments while using the built-in flash diffuser. Anything further than about 7-10 meters though and you will get a standard telephoto looking image where you can tell it was obvious a flash had been used to try to illuminate something from far away (washed out background highlights, under/overexposure, etc.). If you want great closeups, I highly recommend it.

I bought the 580exII as an upgrade to my 430ex, and was very happy with the result. Where the 430 took its time to recycle the 580 didn't. The amount of power that the flash can produce is astounding, even overwhelming at times. I love the new lock feature, forgoing the screw knob, and the menus are easy to use and laid out well. My only complaint is that it gets a bit heavy after a couple hours of use and defintely weighs more than the 430, but this is not really a downside as much as a personal change for me.

Comments about Canon Canon Speedlite 580EX II, Shoe Mount Flash with Guide Number of 190 Feet / 58m at ISO 100:

My husband gave me the Canon 430 Speedlite for Christmas and I played with it for a week before deciding that I wanted to upgrade to the 580 EXII. Glad I did. When the 580 Speedlite arrived, I played with it and even compared both speedlites and was very glad to have upgraded. Returned the 430 to the store where he had purchased it and happy to have my 580!

I use two of these units with the speedlite transmitter. It gives me quick control of light balance. The output is impressive and the versatility of flash control is fantastic. The only disappointment so far has been the battery consumption rate.

I learned a long time ago to buy quality and cry once. That way, I never have buyer's remorse. This flash may be pricey but, the product does what it is intended to do plus some. I use it with my D20. I've owned many Canon products in my day and they have always performed beyond my expectations. One of the main reasons I like Canon products is ease of use and standardization. I'm loyal to Canon and my pictures are proof of their quality.

Comments about Canon Canon Speedlite 580EX II, Shoe Mount Flash with Guide Number of 190 Feet / 58m at ISO 100:

This is a great strobe for on camera use, but it does have some weak points. Leaving the strobe on for long periods of time while on a shoot will cause the batteries to get hot which will shut down the strobe.

Comments about Canon Canon Speedlite 580EX II, Shoe Mount Flash with Guide Number of 190 Feet / 58m at ISO 100:

Basing flash photography purely on the cameras integrated flash for some months, this purchase was highly necessary and long time coming. The flash has got all the basic functionality you can ask for and lots of additional functionality many of us are not going to use ever, but it's good to know that it's there. I use the flash all the time, my wife however thinks it's too big and too heavy and won't use it.
The size (distance from flash head to lens) is an issue when shooting close-ups. Even with the head tilted down to the max (6-7°) the lower part of the subject might be dark/"shadowy", but that's common physics and does not affect my impression of the flash. Great buy!

I have both 580EX and 580EX II. 580EX II is quieter and faster recharge time.
Metal hot shoe is great especially when you use light box like Gary Fong box. But the head size is lerger than 580 EX. Gary Fong box is snug fit for 580EX but forced fit for the EX II. Other than that, it is perfect!

One fine flash. I use this flash to controlled set of 430EXs. Works great, E-TTL 2 is flawless with 580EX II. I don't have to change the setting on each slave unless I want to do it manually. I could set ratio for each group. Perfect for solution for me with a studio on the go.

430EX would be a great subtitution if you don't need the master function.

Fast, consistent, and efficient

Comments about Canon Canon Speedlite 580EX II, Shoe Mount Flash with Guide Number of 190 Feet / 58m at ISO 100:

Essentially the same as the previous 580EX, but faster and more compatible with Canon's DSLRs metering and colorspace. The metal construction with rubber seal is a smart addition.

On full batteries, you can get 1000+ shots with little, if not neglible slow-down in recycling.

This flash has great range. It reaches far with good light. However, like any flash using it at extreme distances can produce undesirable photos.

It is expensive, but you get what you pay for. A good alternative is the 430EX if you don't want to break your bank too badly.
