I use the SG-31R on my Nikon D300 hotshoe to block the pre-flash light from my built-in flash while using my wireless off camera SB-600 flash.
Just enough light gets out of the SG-31G to set off the off camera flash.
Great for blocking pop up flash

I use this with the D200 and SB-800. It is the only way to prevent the on camera flash from influencing the exposure in Commander Mode, even when the on camera flash is set to "--". (I do not find taping exposed E-6 film to the flash to be a viable alternative). I will be getting the SU-800 when I add more SB-800s, but this works great.
