The SB900 constantly overheats where my SB800 functions. I only use new Duracell Coppertop one time use batteries and it overheats quickly. Definatly not for anyone shooting frequently with any quantity. Tried most every fix but nothing works. This should be recalled.

The SB900 is a workhorse small flash. The control improvements over the SB800 make changing settings a snap. It blasts away dependably as I fill card after card of images. I wholeheartedly endorse this lighting device and you will too if you get one.

I've used these strobes on SU-4 (optical) slave, as commanders, and as slave strobes. Awesome all around small flash. Nikon CLS works really well and all the updated features from the SB-800 make it worth the purchase.

I should have paid attention to the reviewers when they said the SB900 overheats. The first time I used it was at a wedding on the beach. I was shooting the wedding party coming on the beach, and was using the SB900 for fill flash. I shot 3 bride's maids when the flash overheated and shut down. Luckily I had my SB800 as backup, and it never skipped a beat. It took the SB900, 15 minutes to cool down so it would work again. I switched back to the SB900, until it overheated and shut down a second time. Once the sun went down, I didn't have any more trouble with it. If you need a Nikon flash unit, find a used SB800, it won't let you down.

I'm new to using flash with my photography and haven't had this all that long, so it's hard to get too detailed about it's pros and cons. However, I've found this flash easy to figure out and I LOVE how useful it is for commanding multiple flashes with Nikon's Creative Lighting System. If fact, I've since purchased an SB-600 and almost find this one easier to use! It's big and I'm small, so I don't love the extra weight, but overall I'm very happy with this product and look forward to learning more about it and realizing it's full potential.

This is a great addition to the Nikon Creative Lighting System. Great for controlling multiple Nikon SB flashes. Built like a tank. It dropped twice from 6'. Once onto a tile floor and once on hardwood. The red lens and batteries fell off upon impact on the tile floor. Popped the lens back on and put batteries back in without any problem to the flash. No cracks or problem with the flash at all. But that's why I buy Nikon. I use this with a Nikon D200 and D3. It's a little heavier than the SB-800.

This flash suited my needs. I needed a high guide number and a fast recycling time for event photography (social gatherings and weddings). With rechargeable batteries the recycling time is right at 2 seconds.

I'm new to the Nikon family but the SB-900 worked beautifully in Auto straight out of the box. I'm still learning full manual control for this flash but I'm pleased with the results I've had.

My only gripe, the SB-900 is significantly larger and bulkier than its predecessor, the SB-800.

Didn't have an overheating issue until I updated to the new firmware. Now, the flash will overheat and shutdown after only 15 consecutive pops at full power. Not really an issue for casual shooters, but if you are using it for wedding photography or fashion, be warned.

This is a great upgrade from my SB-600. I wish it wasn't so big, but oh well. It has consistent output and has plenty of power. Using a lot of bounce flash, I did get it to overheat (not good) so I turned off the overheat function. It still warns of overheating, but doesn't lock you out (so you could still pop off an important photo...)

Expensive, yes, but this flash is worth it. I toyed with all sorts of ideas on adding flashes to my bag. Finally, I pulled the trigger on the 900 because I wanted to use the Nikon Creative Lighting System.

It's a bit complicated out of the box with a lot of controls and thick manual, but this is pro gear. Learning the controls and reading the manual pays off in images you didn't think you could get with an on camera flash. Taking it off camera and using it as part of CLS with my D300 produces even better results. With this flash and 1 or 2 SB600s you won't need to lug "portable" strobe units around. Unless you have very particular needs for output this unit will suffice.

TTL controls are exceptional. I've only begun to experiment with some of the manual controls, but those results have been great as well.

This is an exceptional piece of equipment that you will want to have on you at all times.

A vast improvement on my previous Sb's. This is a big unit but it is very intuitive to use and the new features are fast to learn. I have shot several news jobs and some large conferences since picking up this unit and have been very pleased. It seems a bit heavier on the batteries but it's a small price to pay for the extra power and zoom. Only con is the size. This is a really big speedlight, probably the biggest by far and i've had to rearrange my kit bag to fit it in. As far as bang for your buck goes the SB900 is top value.

I am amazed at the versatility of this unit. Although a little large, it makes up for it in quality and capability. You can use it for anything by itself or in conjunction with other flash units. With this as a commander and an equivalent or smaller unit, you have most of what one needs to do in-field or salon portraiture. It will take me some time to learn all the capabilities of this item.

I am a wedding and events photographer and I regret purchasing this unit.
After a few frames the thermostat kicks in and shuts down your unit and this wasn't under heavy shooting conditions. Not for serious work. I expected way better product coming from Nikon. If I were Nikon I would be embarrassed to put the Nikon name to this product. This unit is for very lite duty photography.

I had read a lot of different reviews some good some bad. I needed to see for my self. Well the problems I read about didn't happen for me. The output is tremendous. I took a picture of my wife at her graduation I was a good 150+ feet away from the stage. The only lighting was tungsten and you would say that I was 10 feet from her the skin tone was perfect. That sold me!

To make it short, as about this flash has already been said so much:

I didn´t recognize anything related to the overheating issue up to now. I updated the firmware directly after I received the flash, maybe that really solves the problem.

The flash is easy and intuitive to use. The GUI is a breeze to use, no comparison with the one of my "old" SB-600.

Features, performance and accessories are all what I expected, no reason to complain about anything.

If at all, the only drawback: This flash is, compared to a SB-600, really a "huge" piece of equipment. Be aware to re-arrange you bag... or to get a new one.

As a personal summary: Well worth every cent, I don´t regret that I decided for it.

Excellent and easy to use flash. MUCH easier to use than the SB800. If you are shooting rapid fire, yes, it will heat up but so did the SB800, but other than that, I have had no problems with it heating up. It recycles very quickly and again, very easy to use. Plan to get another one soon.

I love the new feature allowing me control over the illumination pattern - and find my self leaving it set on even. Nikon's redesign of the control panel was long overdue, and makes field changes easier and faster. I can now quickly move it from on camera flash operation to remote CLS use with minumum fuss. In wedding shooting, this flexibility is appreciated. Used in conjunction with my D300, it makes a wonderful package. Recycle time between flashes with the rechargeable batteries is very acceptable. While I still have my SB 600 and SB 800, they have now been relagated on CLS use, and my go to unit is the SB 900.

My aftermarket flashes died and the sb-800 is out of production so I splurged. Great choice. Easy to use and set up. Worked perfect at at the last wedding. Except that it did overheat at the wrong moment. The warning and temp gauge can be turned off but it still overheats. Other than that, it is an excellent unit. Every shot was perfectly exposed.

I use it to shoot weddings and sometimes fire in quick succession. It recycles very quickly and seems to use less battery consumption than my SB800. I was reluctant to get the SB900 due to the larger size but in use, I couldn't tell any difference between it and my SB800.

I love this unit compared to the other Nikon units. I will be replacing my older units with the SB900. The only negative is that it eats up batteries. Make sure you have a second set of batteries fully charged and ready to go.

The SB900 leads the way in Nikon speedlight power and usefulness, but to me, the best feature is the back panel layout and controls. Compared to an SB800, this thing is the microwave oven and the SB800 is a campfire. Love the gel holder, too! If it cost half the price I would definitely buy a few, having only one seems to only show how inadequate the SB600 and SB800 are by comparison.

Recently purchased, I used the SB-900 for a week's field nature photography in the tropics. Very pleased with performance -- including higher guide number, also extra focal length compatibility (lets me get full coverage with 17mm wide angle, as well as more light concentration with longer lenses). I admit I was initially wary, having heard of the unit's power shut-off problem under repeated use. This feature can be turned off, however, and I think it's a mainly a monitoring sensitivity problem to begin with, much overblown.

I use this mainly for fill flash while shooting outside. Much easier to change to remote than the SB-800, eventhough the 800 is not difficult itself. I have not had the overheating problem reported by others while using a Quantum turbo or the Nikon SD-8 battery pack.

Great new flash from Nikon, add better controls for remote use and new options for auto detecting gels on the newer Nikon bodies. A bit larger in size than the 800 but not enough to cause issues. Upgradeable firmware a plus. No overheat issues with latest firmware.

Great flash. A lot of versatility and possibilities with this lense. I saw a lot of reviews that this flash overheats. Well, I tried... You need to shoot non-stop for nearly 8 minutes to overheat the flash. If I were shooting something like this, I would have another sb-900 in the bag to switch to... This flash is an unbelievably great product!

I use it with a D90 and it works great, doesnt have a 5th battery attachment, standard 4 batteries last longer than 5 batteries on the SB-800.
Flash Head & white bounce card are a wee bit larger that the head & card on the SB-800

The controls are *much* better than the SB-800. The range of output spreads is very useful. The extra zoom range has made the difference in a number of settings. As has the extra power. The downsides are a slightly larger body, a thicker hot show that won't fit on some cold shoes for umbrellas - I had no problem finding cold shoes that worked. Also, for some, the thermal cut-off could be a problem. It has not been an issue for me.

Once I turned off the auto shut down temp gauge setting I have never had a problem with the overheating since.

I shoot wedding professionally & use the 900 on D3's. The first month of use the flash shut down on me at the worse time. However, after going into the menu and turning OFF the temp gauge shut down feature the flash has worked perfectly.

I LOVE the easy off and on gel holder ... perfect for filling in tungsten light in a evenly lit dark church ( approx. 2700 kelvin )

Yeah it's a bit heavy and I'm still not all that crazy about the new wheel button system as compared to the 800 ... but once it's set, this flash just does not miss.

Not sure what people are talking about. I tested this flash. Pushing the test button every 3 to 4 seconds for 5 minutes at half power and it never got over half temp. I can't think of any scenario in a wedding where I would need full power flash that often. It would blind anyone standing in the way. At 10 feet, it outputs at f8.

I was really excited to see Nikon come out with a flash that would meet my needs for weddings. This was the worst....I had it for a month and sent it back, exchanging it for another "old faithful" SB-800.

This flash consistently overheated and shut down in the midst of numerous weddings. The recovery time was unacceptable. I can't belive that Nikon let these overpriced, sub-standard flashes hit the market.

I called Nikon and they said they didn't know anything about it. Impossible! It's all over the internet.

Save your money.

This flash head is large and has a quick recycle time. the range is great on a 70-200mm lens. It gives complete coverage and zooms perfectly. However it has an overheat temperature gauge and shuts down when it "over heats"! I shoot weddings and need a flash I can use for over 20 flashes with in 3 minutes or less. The flash shuts down however. Regardless of what ISO I shoot at even ISO 1200 on a D300! I have to use my sb800s often to push the limits of flash without an overheat over ride shut down.
