If you read about the unit, and make the setting your pictures will be great. Where it calls for 400 speed, I use 800 and the pictures are just right for me.

Another one of those ideas that look great on paper. Definitely not a substitute for a real shoe mount flash and just about as bulky.
Did not do very well on my DSLR.

I use reflectors to bounce off. I have to really crank up the power on my flash to reach the subject if I come off a wall or ceiling. The results are wonderful, but it does take a little knowledge and common sense to get those results. This is NOT a plug n play, you have to think about what you are doing to get a good finished shot.

This little mirror mounted plastic hotshoe reflector really does the job. I have no need for a speedlite flash since my lenses are very fast and I will only use the flip-up for fill light outside if needed, preferring natural light photography. The lightscoop bounces the light just enough to add some light for a nice exposure without the ugly white flash color. I was very skeptical before purchasing, but after reading many reviews I decided to buy this when Adorama was having a sale. I am glad to be able to use my flash indoors for the first time. If you need a flash with high output and many uses, this is not for you, but it works great for me.

I have only used this product a couple of times in an indoor portrait setting. The times left the faces with an orange tint. Didn't care for it at first, but I haven't had time to really check it out with different lighting situations. I wanted to use it to cut back on the shadowing on white backdrops.
I am sure I've not got the setting quite right if it is the 2008 choice award. I'll keep working on the settings to get the orange tint out of the faces.

I was blown away by this product. It's so easy to use and it really does what it says. I saw a HUGE differance using it. I have the Canon EOS40D and it fits perfectly, It doesn't fit on all cameras though, even if it has the external flash clip, so look for your make and model before buying if you have a smaller SLR it may not fit and will leave a bright flash line at the bottom of your pictures.

Just like how pros see it, I find this product a waste of money. It's too expensive, and I am convicted that I should use the money to buy a real flash instead of just a piece of mirror stuck on a piece of fragile plastic.
Idiots.

I love the results on my new DSLR. It saved me having to buy a new flash.
I wish it folded somehow. I worry I'm going to crunch it.
Some of my pictures turn out a little dark. My walls are medium color and my ceilings are 8 ft. and white. It's still not too much of a problem, though, because I can fix it at the computer.

A convenient little light modifier for built in flash. I wish the frame was made out of something stronger than plastic. It may be durable. Time will tell.

What a great item for the DSLR popup flash! I got one for myself for when I don't want to tote around my bounce flash, then I got one for my brother who hasn't yet bought a bounce. It's essential to read the directions, but once you get the hang of it and how your camera will respond to it, you can tweak settings so it works best on your camera. It saves pictures that would otherwise look like they were taken with a point-and-shoot.

Comments about Professor Kobre Professor Kobre's Lightscoop, Standard Version Bounce Flash Device, Universal Model, fits over the Pop-up Flash of most SLR Cameras (American Photo Editor's Choice 2008):
Used at ISO 800 as Prof Kobre specifies (why aren't these provisos in the product description?), with light colored ceilings no more than 10-12 feet high (I think that might be stretching it, personally) and keeping the distances quite short, the Light Scoop can give good results with your on-board flash. You -must- keep these limitations in mind when using the device, and again they should be in the product description! I question Prof Kobres contention that "Modern cameras work fine at ISO 800", and wonder what he means by "modern cameras". My Pentax k200 is modern enough I would hope, and I can certainly tell the difference between images taken at ISO 100 and 800, and I think that applies to most of us who are using "prosumer" grade DSLR's in the sub-$1000 price range. It doesn't mean everything is poorly done at 800, but blithely claiming "it's all good" is equally misleading. So why the poor review? The Light Scoop is very fragile, does not fold down in any way and comes only with a soft bag. A few pounds of pressure in the wrong direction and you are out [$]. This product needs some redesign - a version II could fold and a better design could be more sturdy. Thus, minus 1 star. This product is over-priced. It's a mirror mounted on a fragile plastic form with a tab that slides into your hotshoe mount. It should probably sell for no more than half it's current price point, and if I had realized just how fragile it is I wouldn't have paid it. I foolishly assumed that with the price came a sturdy product that might travel well. This is not the case. Minus another star.Does it work? Yes, within its limits, and very well. But at its price + shipping for something this fragile and cumbersome, you may want to consider putting the money towards a real flash until some sanity is applied to the price of the product or a redesign is accomplished, or better yet, both! It could be a good product, but not at its current price point.

While this seemed like a good idea, I found the photo of the item on the website to be deceptive. When I actually saw it, I found it to be big, clumsy, and fragile. I intended to use it to add bounce-flash to my Nikon D90. I ended up buying the Nikon SB400 flash instead. For the money they charged, this item should have been a folding model, with a little case that could attach to the camera strap so it would always be available. THAT would have been worth the money. Instead, I felt that it was a bit of a rip-off, and I returned it unopened in the package.

Comments about Professor Kobre Professor Kobre's Lightscoop, Standard Version Bounce Flash Device, Universal Model, fits over the Pop-up Flash of most SLR Cameras (American Photo Editor's Choice 2008):
Prof. Kobre's Lightscoop is a Piece of Genius: imagine a 45* angled mirror, that bounces the light of your ugly on-camera flash to the ceiling, or a wall, and create a nice fill light, pretty. It slides in the hot shoe, and stays right in front of the flash. It couldn't be easier. The package comes with a handy pouch to store the lightweight device when not in use (needing a wall or ceiling to bounce the light on, it needs to operate indoor, of course) and a very clear manual which suggest the settings to be used for each and every camera. Highly recommended if: you don't want to spend money on a shoe mount flash but still make pretty pictures: you don't want to carry around your heavy shoe mount flash, but still make pretty pictures. The only thing which isn't that great, part of the light bouncing on the mirror gets reflected back into your eyes, so it may get disturbing if you are really in a dark environment.

I was looking to improve my indoor flash photography after a ton of photos of people opening Christmas presents turned out lousy. This seems like it will do the trick. A few test images really turned out well. I had originally purchased a flash diffuser made of translucent plastic, but it helped only a little compared to this device. This should hold me over for quite awhile until I'm ready to purchase an external flash.

This is a really neat thing I won't leave at home.
Within the limits of the popup flash (particularly the metering control limits with Nikon cameras, for which Professor Kobré gives you full instructions), this is a beautifully simple tool.
I've found it to be a more than adequate replacement for carrying my SB-800 to family gatherings, and with a bit of care you can use it alongside a Nikon CLS flash off-camera, to get a bit of extra fill from the popup flash. If you are inclined to use your flashes to supplement low natural light, this is too inexpensive to ignore.

I use the Lightscoop all the time indoors. Finally I can take candid pictures of my kids and friends. I follow the instructions and easily take great pictures. One of my friends thought I'd hired a professional for some of the portraits I took!!!
And the Lightscoop is lightweight and VERY durable. I don't understand the comments in some review that say it's fragile. I've dropped it in the kitchen, carried it around in my purse, and even found it once in my kids' toy box when I thought I'd lost it forever.
Comments about Professor Kobre Professor Kobre's Lightscoop, Standard Version Bounce Flash Device, Universal Model, fits over the Pop-up Flash of most SLR Cameras (American Photo Editor's Choice 2008):
Good product allowing some nice flash pics, provided you have a low ceiling to bounce the light from, and your subject is close enough: as the device bounces the light both upwards and backwards, there is little remaining light available to the subject.
However, under right conditions, it allows getting correct pictures using your buit-in flash without the problems inherent to it.

Though the instructions call for setting ISO at 800, this can be reduced to 400 if lens is fast enough and subject is close enough. But even at 800, the results are fairly good.

Room size, distance to subject are all important for lighting effects. Even more so with this device. If you zoom or take a horizontal image things can get ugly. Within a narrow range of situations this produces a very satisfactory picture.

Comments about Professor Kobre Professor Kobre's Lightscoop, Standard Version Bounce Flash Device, Universal Model, fits over the Pop-up Flash of most SLR Cameras (American Photo Editor's Choice 2008):
I use this for casual everyday photos when I don't want to carry around the full flash unit. It works great but mainly for indoors shoots as it has to bounce the light off of something.
Key is that you have to read and follow the instructions exactly to set your camera wrong. At first I thought it did not work, and then realized I had the settings wrong. Once you have it, it's quite simple to use and works great.
Only con is that the materials it is made from seem kind of weak so I am worried about damaging it if I stuff it somewhere, and it is a decent size - but very lightweight. Over all - I would say this is a good product for the enthusiast and every-day photographer.

I use this for every day shots when I don't want to go all out with the flash. Key is to read the instructions and then follow them exactly (you have to set up your camera flash properly to get the best results...) It actually works quite well and does perform as advertised which is.
The only thing not so great is that it is still fairly large and feels kind of fragile. A great improvement would be to make it possible to control the direction of the flash. Otherwise I like it.

Works great indoors in regular ht. ceilings, higher/vaulted ceilings cause some decrease in flash output...but overall worth the price!!I haven't had any washed-out cheeks or foreheads since it was delivered!! If you're looking for an inexpensive alternative to an external flash, this is a good bet. Read the instructions and set your camera up accordingly, and it'll perform as advertised.
The results look similar to the examples already posted, so you may need to warm up the lighting in post processing if the ceiling you're bouncing the flash off of gives too much of a fluorescent lighting look to your images for your tastes.

I tried this device on my Canon Reble and the results were disappointing. When you read the instructions you are made aware that the popup flash units on most cameras are not powerful enough to use with this device. You have to push your camera settings to the limit to make use of the low light level produced. It just does not work as expected.

The Lightscoop works as described. Because it relies on the popup flash, it's working range is extremely limited and that's even after you've opened up the aperature and cranked the ISO up to 800.
Still it's a big improvement over using the popup flash as is. The very limited range of use limits it to 4 stars.

Comments about Professor Kobre Professor Kobre's Lightscoop, Standard Version Bounce Flash Device, Universal Model, fits over the Pop-up Flash of most SLR Cameras (American Photo Editor's Choice 2008):
I am truly amazed at how well this simple mirror attachment works. As long as you have light-colored walls and ceilings, it provides a very uniform light distribution. Portraits are shadow-free.
You will have to dial in your own settings for the best effect. The included instructions give you a reasonable starting point. But hey, there has got to be some manual involvement if you want to take credit for your great shots!
My only concern is that the plastic housing does not seem to be too robust. I'm afraid it may break with hard use. Then again, the price was so cheap one could simply buy a replacement and get on with it.
Comments about Professor Kobre Professor Kobre's Lightscoop, Standard Version Bounce Flash Device, Universal Model, fits over the Pop-up Flash of most SLR Cameras (American Photo Editor's Choice 2008):
We all have photo bags filled with accessories and diffusers and gadgets that we never use. But, for some, this item might actually come in handy, so I'm sharing.
Flash photography can be a tremendous pain. But not everyone can afford lenses fast enough to avoid using flash, and not everyone can afford a Speedlite-type flash that provides more power and more flexibility in terms of turning the head to bouce the flash for a more flattering effect. As painful as it might be, the reality is that sometimes (gasp!), the on-camera/pop-up flash might be all we have.
The results of using one's pop-up flash are almost never satisfying. That's where the Lightscoop comes in. It's inexpensive and simple to use.
As anyone who's used an onboard flash knows, the results with that pop-flash alone are just terrible. With the Lightscoop, the light is reflected up and back, diffusing the light to give a softer, more detailed result. The colors are much better, too.
I have not much clue about how diffusers do what they do, but the bottom line for me is: Does it make the picture better? For me, the Lightscoop qualifies.
Wow! What a difference!

I received this as a gift from a photographer friend. He says it's the only gadget he's found that really changes the quality of a picture... without spending loads of money, at least. For me, it's perfect. Once I set up my camera, I use the Lightscoop for my indoor flash pictures and get really natural looking pictures. My friend says my pictures are almost as good as the one he takes with his really expensive flash.

got this after reading reviews and looking at lightscoop user shots in flickr. it's so so cool and the best part is it works most of the time. i hate using the pop up flash indoors since it usually makes my shots harsh with too much highlights, you know what im talking about. switching to low shutter speed makes my photos blurry and fuzzy because of camera shake and you potentially miss all the action. of course a speedlite will fix all of that but i'm just a newbie and i don't want to spend for a flash YET. well at a fraction of the cost, the lightscoop fixed all that because just like a regular speedlite/flash, it bounces the light from your pop up flash upwards making your photos look more natural. works best with low and light-colored ceilings, but you can experiment if you like.
it's made of abs plastic and i found it hard to stuff in my camera bag since i might break it. the lightscoop comes with a pouch and you can find a way to somehow integrate it in your camera bag, maybe loop it somehow.
it's a great invention (shout out to prof kobre) which made my indoor photos a lot better and now i can forget about buying a speedlite in the meantime...

I was not sure about how effective this would be before I decided to test it. I was pleasantly surprised. I wonder why the big camera manufacturers haven't thought of it before. The pop-up flash on most semi-professional cameras is in fact very strong compared to its small size, but its uses are limited, as it is impossible to turn it in other directions to create soft bounce light. I have rarely used my pop-up flash until I acquired the Lightscoop (pop-up on its own makes for harsh light and hard shadows). Now I use the pop-up often with this device. Pictures look much more appealing.

I'm a professional photographer and I travel a lot. I'm always looking for ways to cut back on weight - if not for the whole trip, then at least for daytrips or outings. This little thing can't do everything my Canon flash can do (I'm using the Lightscoop with a Canon EOS 30D) but for basic indoor portraits and other shots, you can absolutely get very similar results. I bet most editors I work for wouldn't be able to tell the difference. It's the best gadget in my photo bag - especially if you take into account that it weighs next to nothing. You do have to remember to put your camera on the right settings, otherwise it may come out wrong.

I was very excited when Lightscoop.com announced that their product was compatible with the Olympus Evolt Line of DSLRs. I was quick to purchase the combo kit and could not wait to try it. I am very unpleased with this product. Images were darker and looked worse than with the harsh light from the pop up flash, even with all settings exactly like they recommend. I guess that my fault for taking a shortcut instead of getting a real flash unit.

This little thing fits perfectly on my D200. Just tried several shots with it. The lighting is natural, as it's supposed to be. But I adjusted the flash compensation to +1.0, which is the maximum on my D200, the picture is still a little dark. A little bit post-processing should address this easily. Compared to the shots taken with direct flash, the lighting is beautifully natural. No glaring point from my bike at all.
The only issue I have with this is the material used. The plastic is somewhat flimsy and soft. I'd suggest use aluminum or something alike to build the shell. And the accuracy should be improved. The whole thing is a little off to the left. But overall, it's a very nice product and achieved what it is supposed to do.

Comments about Professor Kobre Professor Kobre's Lightscoop, Standard Version Bounce Flash Device, Universal Model, fits over the Pop-up Flash of most SLR Cameras (American Photo Editor's Choice 2008):
Lightscoop enhanced flash photos with my Nikon D80 have been excellent: attractive bounce flash lighting from the pop-up flash on the camera. I always thought it should be possible. Now I know it is.
The Lightscoop is easy to use and produces just the kind of lighting from the built-in flash that I had previously only dreamed about. The standard Lightscoop, evenly fills indoor flash photos with natural looking light direction and shadow. The warming Lightscoop does all this and more by enhancing flash portraits with warm, flattering skin tones. And, both versions give the camera a sleek, modern look that I rather like.
If you are a digital SLR user like me -- rarely use flash, and when you do are always unhappy with the washed-out results of the camera’s pop-up flash -- you will love this product. Why buy an expensive external flash unit dedicated to your camera when Lightscoop is lightweight , durable, inexpensive and it works? Few camera accessories, I have found, deliver so much value for so little cost.

Comments about Professor Kobre Professor Kobre's Lightscoop, Standard Version Bounce Flash Device, Universal Model, fits over the Pop-up Flash of most SLR Cameras (American Photo Editor's Choice 2008):
The Lightscoop delivers as promised as far as lighting -- very pleasing quality. The major drawback is that you need a white or beige wall fairly close to your back because the light bounces off the mirror on the Scoop, which directs it BEHIND you to bounce off the wall. The other problem is the the recommended ISO of 800, which is starting to get into the grainy or noisy levels. However, I've experimented and depending on the other light in the room, the color of the wall behind you and its proximity, I've been successful with ISO as low as 500.
Given its ease to use, weight, and results in the right environment, it's a great artificial light modifier for the price and small enough to carry in your bag, and definitely a good idea to keep in the studio for "mobile" or informal portraits. It's much better than a bounce card/piece EXCEPT when you don't have a wall at your back.
By the way, Adorama sells it for the same price as the Light Scoop site so they're not marking it up!

I own one of these and it's very handy if you don't want to drag around a traditional flash. The quality of light created is far superior to straight flash photography. You'll probably need to use it on the higher ISO settings since pop-up flashes aren't very strong but with newer cameras this is no longer a problem. Would be nice if it came with a pouch but I just went and found one to carry it around in.

I've used this at weddings - for the informal portions like rehearsal dinners, family sessions indoors, impromptu portraits. It's not a replacement for a separate flash unit, but is a very good modifier for the pop-up flash, in specific circumstances - when you have a low-enough ceiling or nearby wall to bounce the light off. Worth taking up space in my carry everywhere camera bag.

I love using this when I don't feel like carrying around my strobe, which can be big and heavy and often times overkill if I'm just hanging out with friends and want to take some pictures. The pop-up flash on my camera creates TERRIBLE harsh light, but with the Lightscoop, my pictures are transformed. You'll never want to use your pop-up flash without it once you see the difference.

We use the Lightscoop all the time. It is especially perfect for taking pictures of our newborn daughter -- we can snap away all day and night without blinding her with a flash and without any red-eye issues. It's super-easy to use and worth far, far more than the [$] it costs.

How have amateur photogs gone all these years without this terrific, inexpensive, easy-to-use alternative to external flash?... Lightweight add-on works nothing like "diffusers" I've previously seen ... This actually bounces the flash, for infinitely better light distribution -- eliminating washout, red-eye, unwanted shadows, and other harsh elements of most non-pro indoor flash photography... Well-designed and well-built -- get one for yourself and another for a pal!...

used indoors your flash photos will ALWAYS look better with the Lightscoop than direct flash. Have used it for quick portraits, table top flower shots, group shots and whole room shots. highly recommended for photojournalists.

The LightScoop lets me make great, pro-level portraits without the annoying studio. It pops my informal portraits out of the realm of harsh, front-lighted snapshots, by simply bouncing my built-in strobe's light off the ceiling.
