To take advantage of the offer of a show in a local restaurant, being unemployed, I wanted inexpensive frames, so I chose Format.[...] I experienced several problems with these frames. Most problems stem from their being front-loading. This necessitates extremely precise mat sizing. If mats are too small, they're loose. If mats are too big, they won't fit. Rear-loading frames allow some play. Front-loading allows none. If a mat is a bit over size, on the order of 1/16 inch, when you press the mat, picture, and glass into the frame, it may be too wide and go in the frame, but split the frame at one corner. Fortunately for me, my neighbor and good friend once owned a framing shop. She solved all the problems I had with the frames. Conclusion:If you want to save money on framing a few prints, Format may work for you. If you have more than five or so prints to frame, seek a real-loading frame.I would not recommend this to a friend hanging a show. I would recommend it to a friend who wanted to give someone a gift of one or two prints. Without her expertise, I'm uncertain how I could have prepared my prints to hang.

The Format frames have created their own style, which is perfect for many applications. I use them in varying sizes for unmatted prints that require an unobtrusive edge treatment and an affordable price point. Also terrific for installations of multiples, as the frame can be used as its own template.
The 16 x 20 size is pushing the limits of the Format construction. Stability in this size is somewhat iffy. But--keep in mind that if you need a piece of 16 x 20 glass on short notice, the price is very close to what you would pay at your favorite glass shop and readily available.

I have 89 8X10 prints in Format frames on one wall of my office. They fit close together and look good. I have 15 16X20 Format frames in my living room. They look good without stealing attention from the prints.
