Solid state, no pesky wavering needles or other moving parts -- its LED display is far superior to those types. Self-powered by the battery it's testing. Very accurate and reliable so far. I only use mine for AA and AAA cells, both NiMH and alkaline -- there's a switch to set it for rechargeable or primary batteries. I like it so much I'll probably buy another to keep in my camera bag -- it's so small and lightweight it can be tucked into practically any camera bag.
