Comments about Sigma Sigma 70-300mm f/4-5.6 APO DG Macro Tele Zoom Lens for the Maxxum & Sony Alpha Mount.:

Used this lens for one season. It was pretty good but suddenly the autofocus failed. Sounds like gears ratching inside but not driving the focus.

Optical quality is good enough, but I also lost one of these lenses to cheap plastic parts, the focus ring ate itself.

Comments about Sigma Sigma 70-300mm f/4-5.6 APO DG Macro Tele Zoom Lens for the Maxxum & Sony Alpha Mount.:

This is actually the second of this model I have had. The first fried the internal plastic focusing mechanism and was too costly to replair. That makes this lens a disposable imho. You ceratainly can't do better for the money but if you have the money you can do much better. It has a very difficult time focusing at the extreme high zoom and the manual focus ring is not calibrated accurately. So a full setting of infinity results in a blurry photo every time! The bottom line is that until I find more cash this lens will have to do and I have in fact gotten some nice shots with it. Just not as many as I would have liked.

Comments about Sigma Sigma 70-300mm f/4-5.6 APO DG Macro Tele Zoom Lens for the Maxxum & Sony Alpha Mount.:

While it's not the absolute best for its focal lengths, it has to be the best in its price range. I have a kit lens and two high-quality primes as well, but nearly all of the shots I've had printed were taken by this beauty.
It should be noted that I still haven't figured out what difference the Macro switch makes... but I don't mind.
