Comments about Sigma Sigma 17 - 50mm f/2.8 EX DC OS HSM Auto Focus Wide Angle Zoom Lens for Nikon Digital SLR Cameras:

I purchased this to replace my slower Nikon 18-55 kit lens. While the Nikon lens is nice for the price, it pales in comparison to this Sigma! I have just returned from vacation with over 700 photos taken in a variety of situations (inside, outside, general scenary, architectural, low-light, night time, etc.) Of course, there were a few dogs in the group but overall, I am extremely pleased with its performance. For the most part, its focus is extremly fast, quiet and accurate. I do not believe I had to rely on flash except for optional fill. For those of you who have HD TVs, if you have not viewed your images on the TV, then you do not know what you are missing! HD viewing truly puts this lens's best foot forward! I stronly recommend it.

Comments about Sigma Sigma 17 - 50mm f/2.8 EX DC OS HSM Auto Focus Wide Angle Zoom Lens for Nikon Digital SLR Cameras:

I wanted to upgrade my lens from the kit included 18-55mm and replace one in about the same range but with a brighter aperature for my D90. I researched the Tokina 16-50 2.8, Tamron 17-50 2.8, the Nikon 17-55 2.8 and Nikon 24-70 2.8. After reading all the reviews I narrowed it down to the Sigma and the Nikon 17-55. I chose the Sigma primarily for 2 reasons. First was the image quality was close and the deal breaker was the price and image stabilization. At $1,000 less I couldnt justify to myself the need to spend that much more. If I were a pro I am sure I would have gone the other way. I am happy to report that this lens, my first Sigma, has not disappointed. The only thing that gave me pause was the varying reports of Sigma's varied production of the same lens family. Some will have glowing reports and some will report that it is the worse lens they have ever seen. I apparently got one from the good production batch (thank you!!). I got the lens in time to shoot a wedding. I took my kit 18-55 as a backup for the just in case. Didnt need it. Lens did a wonderful job. Bokeh is very nice and pleasing. Tack sharp at all aperatures. Obviously less so at 2.8, but it is darn good wide open. Color rendition and contrast is super. Image Stabilization allowed me to shoot sharp images at 1/6 of a second. While my kit 18-55 has served me well, the Sigma is obviously as a superior lens and I love the Nikon 18-55. The only nitnoid so far (and I am being picky here), is the zoom ring is a bit stiff. You have to really give it a go. Plus it rotates in the opposite direction than my Nikon lenses, so muscle memory may play a factor here. Love this lens and would definite recommend it highly. Buy from Adorama. Local retailers tend to sell lenses that others have used, hated and returned. Avoid the headaches.

Comments about Sigma Sigma 17 - 50mm f/2.8 EX DC OS HSM Auto Focus Wide Angle Zoom Lens for Nikon Digital SLR Cameras:

This was my first non-Nikon branded lens and I was very hesitant about this purchase. Several reviews criticized Sigma for problems with front/back focusing. I must say this lens has greatly exceeded my expectations and is absolutely wonderful. It is sharp at all apertures (with the slight softening at f/22 due to diffraction) and all focal lengths. The MTF(50) data on this lens is outstanding and I can see why. In some ways it can replace my 35mm and 50mm 1.8 primes because they don't reach peak sharpness until f/2.8-4 anyway. So far I have not had any problems with focus issues. The focus has been fast and accurate. The contrast is excellent and I do not notice any color shift as one reviewer had noted. FLD glass is far superior to the glass used on the primes and certainly the kit lenses. It has to be seen to truly appreciate the difference.

I highly recommend this lens. If you can afford the extra cost (although it is much cheaper than the Nikon equivalent) it will not disappoint. A constant f2.8 across all focal lengths is a pleasure to use. As I stated above, since this is my first non Nikon brand lens I hope I get many years of use out of it. It is likely to stay on the camera most of the time.
