When I upgraded to the Pentax K20D I didn't buy a kit lens. I purchased this lens instead and have been very happy with the purchase. I just visited my family on vacation, and because of the short trip took only this lens. I found it was all I needed for the trip. The pictures came out very sharp, and full of contrast. I really like the Macro capability and used it several times. The fast F2.8 speed at wide angle was also good for indoor shots without flash. The down side is I often have a hard time getting the lens hood on the lens. It's a good hood, just hard to mount for me. I like it over the Pentax 17-70mm F4 as it's faster at wide angles and the Pentax does not have the Macro function.

This is a very sharp lens. With the shake reduction on the Pentax k100D and k10D you'll get extremely sharp photos throughout the whole zoom and aperture range. The focus is not superfast, but accurate. With wide angle is some distortion that is corrected in Photoshop in less than a minute. The zoom range is very convenient and the semi-macro is great bonus.

May not be EX, but very very good. I use it with my K100D all the time. The tele coverage is great, and once you figure out what this lens is good at, you can get really good pictures in the entire aperture range. The only time I thought of another lens was in a dimly lit wedding. They powerlines had burnt and they had the ceremony with a generator. Chances are you will not have that happen too often.
