Comments about Sigma Sigma 18-50mm f/2.8-4.5 DC OS HSM Standard Zoom Lens for Canon EOS Digital SLR Cameras:
I bought this to replace my Canon kit lens and boy am I happy. The build quality of this is far superior to the kit and the focusing is much faster. If you need to replace your kit lens I would highly recommend this lens.
Comments about Sigma Sigma 18-50mm f/2.8-4.5 DC OS HSM Standard Zoom Lens for Canon EOS Digital SLR Cameras:
1) Build – Can't be compared with Tokina or Canon L series but acceptable2) Zoom ring – damped well controlled3) IQ – pretty sharp even at f4. Very sharp at f84) Bonus – closest distance approx 20cm, can be use for closeup/macro which was NOT advertise as a feature. When I add 2x teleconverter, this give me macro effect. This is ONLY [$] lens, so can't complain. Can't compare with Canon L Series lens but it performs generally well. IQ at F2.8 was soft but I generally bumped to F 4 - 8 and use flash at night @ ISO 100 - 400 and it did a good job. Focus very fast even at low light, OS worked. It's a good range lens without the extending barrel. Perfect for beginner and intermediate users.

Comments about Sigma Sigma 18-50mm f/2.8-4.5 DC OS HSM Standard Zoom Lens for Canon EOS Digital SLR Cameras:
I debated on this lens and one that has a constant 2.8 w/o OS. The OS helps in low light situations so having a f4.5 is not really a problem. What 2 things I really like about the lens are the HSM and fully internal zooming. The lens does not extend for zooming or focus, a feature I have with other lenses.

Comments about Sigma Sigma 18-50mm f/2.8-4.5 DC OS HSM Standard Zoom Lens for Canon EOS Digital SLR Cameras:
I bought this for the IS to help in low light situations during wedding photography. The IS seems to work pretty good, but the images are softer than I expected. It's obviously not a Canon L lens, but I did expect better. The biggest issue is slow focus in anything but ideal conditions. Not a good quality for even a semi-professional wedding photographer.
In all this is a good lens for a casual user and maybe worth the price if you are only buying it to upgrade from a kit lens. As for me, I wish I had purchased the 18-50mm f/2.8 instead even though it's a bit more. I also bought Sigma's just released 50-200mm IS for wedding photography and, though I haven't used it yet, I'm afraid it may be about the same in quailty.
