Comments about Sigma Sigma 8 - 16mm f/4.5-5.6 DC HSM AutoFocus Wide Angle Zoom Lens for Nikon Digital SLR Cameras.:

My first wide lens experience, and I wasn't sure how much I would use this... Turns out I use it a lot! 8mm is great for getting it all in and appears to be the widest available lens for DX bodies. I've had no issues with autofocus or build quality, and the sharpness so far seems great. I recommend this for DX users looking to go wide

Took this lens on a trip to Italy - it was tremendous indoors with my D90. Captured dark paintings, complete interiors, and landscapes. The Sigma Rep took the time to show me all that this lens can do, and I would definately recommend to anyone.

Comments about Sigma Sigma 8 - 16mm f/4.5-5.6 DC HSM AutoFocus Wide Angle Zoom Lens for Nikon Digital SLR Cameras.:

This Sigma lens is one of the best UWA on the market today. In the past, Sigma has had trouble with quality control. It seems to have been mostly taen care of in this lens, with only a few copies that seem to have focus centering issues.

While this lens is not the fastest UWA on the market, the aperture is not as much of an issue with UWA's as it is with longer focal lengths. When shooting at 8-16mm, nearly everything is in focus at any aperture. While the f/4.5-5.6 is slow, particularly in low light, it is possible to hand-hold this lens down to approximately 1/4 second exposures due to its wide angle of view, making it good for many situations. The sweet spot of the lens seems to be around f/8 to f/11, but optics produce above average results at all F/stops.

The built of the lens is strong and hefty. It is perhaps not up to the build of Nikon Pro glass, but is far better than most Nikon lenses in this price range. The body of it is metal, with plastic/rubber rings. The lens does not extend with zooming or focusing, making the tube far stronger than most zoom lenses.

The glass itself extends beyond the edge of the lens, and is protected by the built-in, metal lens hood. This makes it very susceptible to finger prints and dust. I would usually consider this a problem, and would have listed this as a con, but it actually makes the image quality far better than a flat, front element and so I did not consider this a con.

While the lens is considered rectilinear, it does have a touch of distortion. The distortion is not even noticed unless there is a straight line near the edge of the frame. If distortion is a problem, it is easy to correct in processing.

Autofocus is slightly slow for a UWA lens, considering the slight movement needed for the glass to focus. However, it is not slow enough to notice for normal shooting. Manual focus is very smooth and is easy to adjust. The only problem I have with it is that it rotates in the opposite direction of standard Nikon lenses (not the zoom, only the focusing. The zooming ring rotates in the same direction as Nikon glass).

Flare is controlled amazingly well. Most UWA lenses suffer from stray rays entering the lens and reducing the contrast as well as add flare spots. This Sigma handles the flare so well, I was only able to achieve a slight amount of flare, less than that produced by any other lens I've tried, both in the wide and telephoto category.

Overall, I would highly recommend this lens to anyone wanting an UWA lens.

This lens is considerably wider than your 10-XX or 11-XX. Besides, the quality beats others in this category.
