Manfrotto Midi Ball Head
By Billy BobVerified Purchaser from Boston, MA on 7/11/2008
Pros:
Attaches Firmly, Good Stability, Large Range of Motion, Strong Clamp
Best Uses:
Long Exposures, Photography, Stabilization
Describe Yourself:

Bottom Line:
Yes, I would recommend this to a friend

This ball head really deserves 4.5 stars; my only con (and a very minor one) is with respect to the clamp on the head that holds in the rapid connect plate. At times, I'm not sure how firmly engaged is the clamp. Otherwise, very solid and a great product. I don't worry that my D300 is going anyplace.

This is my first ball head and I'll never look back! Build quality is excellent, typical of Manfrotto. You can really fine-tune the ball tightness, and the horizontal panning action is smooth as silk. The RC2 quick release lever has a safety lever which is an excellent touch so you won't find your expensive camera/lens at your feet; not what you want to happen! I know it's not an Arca-Swiss which are arguably the best; but if you're on a "tripod budget", this head has what it takes; stability, quality, and the confidence that your expensive gear is in "good hands" with its phenolic ball and 17.6 lb. capacity.

Very nice tripod head

Like most Bogen products, these are very well made. Very good for everyday use at a good price. Every thing works as expected. If a ball head is what you are after this one will not let you down. The only reason for four stars is that I am spoiled on the Bogen pistol grip head that I use most of the time.

We have an old Bogen tripod and massive ball head that weights a ton, I got a monopod and this mini to see if they would be a good lightweight substitution. They are great, now I plan on adding a lightweight carbon fiber tripod and another mini so that we can leave the dinosaur at home.

Manfrotto is quality. This is a very nice ball head. All the features you would want except one. When using a large lens, hold on to your camera when releasing the brake till you learn how to release it slowly. I would still hold on just in case so it will not flop down... that is, the lens will end up looking at the floor. But I think you will find this with most ball heads unless you get into the high end Arca-Swiss type models.

awesome ballhead!

I have it on Bogen 3021BPRO. I mount Pentax 6x7 and often times for vertical shots. it was rock solid even wind upto maybe 35mph blowing against it. I even dropped it on concrete with 3021BPRO's weight against it, i.e. landed on the ball head. still did not move. Solid.

Maybe people don't realize when camera is mounted sideways for vertical shot, the ball head and tripod mount is encountering more weight than the weight on equipment specified-refer to physics please.
