At 3 lbs and 20" folded length w/head - I plan to actually use this tripod in the field! I had a great tripod (giottos w/moveable center column)prior, but weighed almost 7-8 lbs and was over 28" w/head.) I liked the stability and flexibility, but hated to carry it. I purchased this Vanguard Epsod 234AP tripod 6/15/10 and it was a toss up between the Carbon Altus version for $300 or this Aluminum one at [$] - you can guess which one prevailed. This model of the Epsod versions is a bit sturdier than others with larger dia leg sections - it feels better and weighs only about 3 lbs with head. Flip locks open easily and it comes with another short column for low work and main column is reversable - I don't know how truly useful this feature will be yet since your camera will be upside-down and can actually fall out if not careful. The box that I initially received did not include the carry-bag - I had to call Vanguard and they shipped me one pronto. One small improvement - I would like to see a safety lock on the quick shoe release lever, otherwise I am happy and so is my shoulder. If you want twist lock legs - you will have to opt for the pricier Altus Carbon model. If you are tired of carrying a big tripod, this tripod is worth a try. From what I have tried already - this is a great small, sturdy tripod for the money - maybe you will even use it!
