Tall enough that I don't need to extend the column for most uses. I'm still getting used to the process of setting it up---all the twisting and untwisting of the legs---but once I get the rhythm down it will go pretty quickly. When I've got it set up, it's a totally stable platform that I can forget about while I concentrate on photography.
Great lightweight tripod for use with a mid sized dslr and lens combo. I wouldn't try to put your full size pro and 500mm behemoth on this and expect it to keep it rock solid. Light enough to chuck in your backpack when you're off on a long walk. I've got a Really Right Stuff head on it, which I can also fully recomend.
