I use this column with a ball head to make swapping heads on my tripod fast and efficient. The rubber end cap must be removed for the swap, and I wonder just how long it will hold up to being taken off each time. The construction is up to Manfrotto standards otherwise.
The short column does allow the tripod to place the camera closer to the ground, and it does give marginal weight reduction.

The long center column that came with my tripod was fine, except that it's length seemed to get in my way more than I was using it. This shorter column allows me to get the tripod closer to the ground (by spreading the legs out) without having the move the center column.
