Yes, I would recommend this to a friend
I have had the 5000 for about 6 years and it has taken thousands of pictures without problems. I also have a Nikon N-80 and the features on the 5000 exceed those of the N-80, except for the obvious (such as no interchangeable lenses, inability to shoot above 800 ISO, and the digital zoom has its limits (regular zoom is good though)). Excellent, less expensive alternative to a digital SLR.
