No, I would not recommend this to a friend
Good images for the size of the file, but images suffer from Nikon's poor noise control. It's sad to say, but the D2HS has the best high ISO noise of any Nikon camera under the D3 series. That's sad because the noise on the D2HS is pretty bad once you get above ISO 400.
Images seem to have a yellow cast; skin tones are not good with this camera. I see a lot of nature and bird photographers get good results with it. My results shooting people with it have not been as promising. It just seems to miss the mark on skin tones.
