I think this product serves its purpose, which is allowing me to attach my external mic to Canon's proprietary shoe mount. Other brands make a similar piece, but this one is made of really good, sturdy material.

Now, being a very technical person, I feel that this could have been built better. For example, in order to keep the mic facing forward, the shoe adapter should not be tightened fully. To tighten it fully will cause your external device to mount at an angle.

What I'm trying to say is that this is not the kind of thing you'd expect to need to read the instructions for, but I found myself referring to the instructions to make sure I had it set correctly.

This adapter is easy to use, does not damage up the electrical contacts on the advanced shoe, and has polymer shims so you can get a **perfect** fit. It allows you to mount any regular 'cold shoe' accessory such as a light or mic to Canon's 'S-Mini Advanced Hot Shoe' on the HF camcorders. The Mini Hot Shoe's main claim to fame is that it provides power to attached devices, but with a 890ma standard battery (6.5 watt-hour) on the HF-11 camcorder it sure isn't going to run much of a video light for very long. This adapter lets you use a commercially available light with its own battery, at a useful power level.

I am using the adapter to mount my RODE microphone to the camera's hot shoe instead of having to use Canon's 'mini-S Advanced' mic which can't be mounted on or used with any other camcorder. I also occasionally use the adapter to mount a Sony 20 watt video light with its two hour battery.

I have been using the mount for over a month with no problems of retention or damage to the camcorder. Overall I am extremely happy with this product. It is well worth the price.
