No, I would not recommend this to a friend
I have two XM2 Canons. I'm thankful I got the extended warranty, because they both have had problems. While the picture quality, sound, and features are good for the price, the mechanics are surprisingly poor for Canon. On One, the tape transport mech. went bad in 2nd yr. of operation, and on other the zoom failed, two years in a row, even after sending it through the repair shop. If I were you, I'd buy the next level up in a Canon video Cam.
