The VariZoom VZ Rock is perhaps the best LANC controller on the market for the price. Yes, it may seem a little expensive at first in comparison to other companies/models, but this is one of the few in this price range with a true variable speed zoom control. If you are already used to using the variable control on your camera, the VZ Rock will feel right at home to you. There is virtually no difference between this control and the one on your camera. Also, this would be a great addition for cameras like the Canon GL1 or other prosumer cameras that have small rocker switches that don't allow for much variable control.

In my particular case, I use the VZ Rock on a camera crane - primarily for live production. The two things I love about having the VZ Rock is it gives me the ability to vary the speed of the zoom even during a shot. Also, it makes it much easier to quickly zoom in or zoom out to set your next shot. With many LANC controllers, you have a set speed, and it can be really difficult to reset shots and then get your speed reset - especially in live production. With the VZ Rock, you can change shot composition in literally seconds.

Also, the VZ Rock fits nicely on a tripod handle, and it would work great if used for a studio zoom controller, or any other situation where the camera person cannot comfortably access the on-camera controls.

Finally, the biggest bonus on the VZ Rock is the additional controls beyond the zoom. The auto focus toggle is one of the best features I have seen on a LANC controller allowing you to quickly and easily change your camera from auto to manual focus. The focus rocker switch allows for mid-range rack focuses, and the addition of the record button and tape search buttons are just extras that make the VZ Rock a bargain.

This is a great product. I use it for my Sony A1u and Sony PD150/170s. I also own a sony version with a built in handle.
This product is very usable and can attach to just about anything...ie tripod handle or shoulder mounted unit.
