Questions about this item:

Shopper  I want to save family photos. I realize the external hard drives that use disks can fail as can the internal hard drive. Is there a failure mode for solid state external drives?
Andrew R  Yes, even solid state drives can fail. SSDs, memory cards, etc. all have a failure point which will depend on the manufacturer, type and form factor. (Solid state memory has a finite number of red/write cycles that they can endure before failure). Best practice is to backup on several different media as well as "cloud" storage to ensure data integrity.
JA B  Do I remove what seems to be a film from the face of the USB unit? Then plug the slim Portable 500GB/GO into the USB port on the keyboard; then what happens? and what do I do next? jab
JAMES N  Wait for the explosion- ha ha- the film is there to protect the face from scratching It should load and put an icon on your screen
