Incredible Lens

By sac

I figured I should snag a super-wide to complement my Sigma 17-70 and Canon 70-200 f/4 L IS before our latest vacation (over to Europe). I thought I could find a use for it there, and it ended up on my Rebel XT most of the time. This lens rocks in most any situation you want where you need a wide view. Awesome in the Alps and in London and Paris. f/4-5.6 isn't fast, but with the short focal range, you can handhold this in darker areas and still get sharp shots. Images are sharp with stunnin...

Best value for money

By SHYUE O.

I have used this lens for about 1month now. It is my favorite landscape lens. I was looking for a wide angle lens for my APS-C camera. Between the few choices available, the Canon 10-22mm, and Tamron, I chose the Sigma as it was the cheapest. I tested the other two lenses too, and did not find differences sufficient to justify the price premium. Also, Sigma makes a f/3.5 version of this lens. I have not used that before, but f/4 is sufficient for almost all the situations I am shooting ...

Designed exclusively for Canon digital SLR cameras, the ultra-wide-angle 10-20mm offers a view from 102.4 to 63.8 degrees, making it ideal for landscape photography and other vast applications. The lens is distinguished by its three special low dispersion (SLD) glass elements, which effectively compensate for color aberration, and its aspherical lenses, which provide maximum correction for distortion and various aberrations. As a result, the lens produces an extremely high image quality throughout the entire zoom range. The HSM-equipped models, meanwhile, produce fast autofocus (AF) speeds and quiet shooting while still letting you perform full-time manual focus. Other details include a minimum focusing distance of 9.4 inches at all focal lengths and an integral petal-type hood to block out extraneous light.

Lens Elements and Coating
The multilayer lens coating and lens design reduce flare and ghost--a common problem with digital cameras--while also creating an optimal color balance throughout the entire zoom range. At the same time, the lens offers three SLD glass elements that effectively compensate for color aberration, along with a piece of glass mold and two hybrid aspherical lenses that offer excellent correction for distortion and all types of aberration.

Inner Focusing System and HSM The lens incorporates an internal focusing system that eliminates front lens rotation, letting you use a petal-type hood to protect from additional glare. And models equipped with a Hyper-Sonic Motor (HSM) produce silent, high-speed autofocus and full-time manual focus for Sigma, Canon, and Nikon D-mount lenses.

Best Consumer Lens
The Sigma 10-20mm lens is so respected that it was named the best consumer lens in Europe (2006) by the Technical Image Press Association (TIPA), a collection of 31 publications from 12 countries. According to TIPA, the 10-20mm lens offers a versatile range of wide-angle focal lengths, a good optical performance, and a budget price, making it an excellent investment for owners of DSLRs with APS-C format sensors. Its sharpness remains constant throughout the zoom range, and its compact size makes it an ideal companion for shooting travel, landscapes, or architectural subjects.

Questions & Answers

Questions about this item:

ROBERT K  I have an older model Canon EOS40D and need a wide angle lens. Is this a good choice for that camera??
TINA C  yes it is
STEPHEN H  I have used this lens on my 60D for interiors and weddings, and it delivers excellent picture quality throughout its zoom range. It's a very good choice for the 40D.
RICHARD M  This lens will definitely work on your 40D. I had a 50D and used this same lens for capturing wide angle shots.
JOHN S  I have used this lens on both my Canon 60D and older EOS Rebel XLT and have had great results using on either camera.
BRANDON D  This is a good choice if you're looking for a VERY wide angle lens. At 10mm, the wide end is extremely wide, but works great for things like interior real estate shots or very wide landscapes. At the long end it's still only 20mm which is still pretty wide. The only thing I would say is that, unless you mount this lens with the specific intention of shooting very wide, you might find yourself wishing for more reach on the long end.
Kevin B  No, it's not a sharp lens. Go with the canon ef-s 10-22mm 3.4:4.5 or the new ef-s 10-18mm 4.5;5.6 stm lens. Both are crop sensor lenses.
RHONDA R  In terms of whether it is compatible with your camera, yes I think it is. I originally purchased this lens for my Rebel XSi. At the time, I was satisfied with the quality. Now, a few years later, my criteria for sharpness has changed. I shoot stock photos which need to be tack sharp across the image. I now find that this lens has a lot of focus falloff at the edges. If focus is in the center of the frame, it's not too bad, but if I focus at one side, the focus is very blurry at the other end.
PATTI S  I used this lens on a EOS 450D and I loved it. It is super wide and allows for some new creative looks in your photos. I definitely recommend it.
MARK B  I used this on my 30D which is even older! Great choice for that body.
JAMES S  Can the sigma 10-20 1:4-5.6 EX DC HSM be used with a full frame camera like the Canon 5d Mark II?
ANDREAS S  I think it can't. There is a compatibility on the sigma homepage: Go to the page of this lens, click on the resources tab and then on DC lens compatibility chart. Please compare.
ROBERT S  Hi jim , no this cannot be used with a full frame camera because it was designed for c-size sensors only. You would have severe vignetting in the corners, on a full frame sensor. If you want a good wide angle lens for your full frame camera I would recommend the canon 17-40L . This lens sells for around $729.00 new or buy used in great condition around $600.00. I have one mounted on my canon 7D and the picture quality is just amazing, sharp.
CRAIG M  Yes, it can be used with full-frame cameras(as I understand), but this lens has been designed and engineered to be used with the APS-C cameras such as the Canon Rebel and 40/50D-series. Therefore, it will not offer a truly "full-frame" image projection to the so-called full-frame cameras, and will project an image slightly smaller than a full-frame sensor, resulting in a vignetted or shadowed or bordered image. This lens was designed and engineered from the get-go to be used with APS-C and smaller-sensor cameras, and will not provide full-coverage imaging when used with a full-frame camera such as a 5D or 1D.
JOE M  Only if you want a fuzzy circle...it is made for APS-C format.
Shopper  Is this a Full Frame Lens?
TINA C  Yes
CHAD C  No. This lens will not work with a full frame camera.
THOMAS W  Not really, though it will work but with vignetting. It is a great APS-C size lens, however.
JAMES N  It is really designed for a APS-C sensor camera. I am unsure if the mount will work on a Full Frame camera..I would use caution that the lens mount did not co tact the mirror. I hope this helps
