About Sigma

• This 18-200mm f/3.5-6.3 DC OS (Optical Stabilizer) high power zoom ratio lens is exclusively designed for digital SLR cameras and is capable of covering a wide range of focal lengths from wide angle to telephoto.

It is equipped with Sigma's own unique technology of OS (Optical Stabilizer) function. This function uses two sensors inside the lens to detect vertical and horizontal movement of the camera and works by moving an optical image stabilizing lens group, to effectively compensate for camera shake.

It automatically detects movement of the camera and compensates for camera shake when shooting moving subject such as motor sports. Two SLD (Special Low Dispersion) glass elements and three aspherical lenses provide excellent correction for all types of aberrations.

The super multi-layer lens coating reduces flare and ghost. This lens provides superior image quality throughout the entire zoom range. An inner focusing system eliminates front lens rotation, making the lens particularly suitable for using circular polarizing filters and the petal-type lens hood supplied.

Preliminary Assessments

I've had this lens for about two weeks, now. My comments are based on preliminary useage. I have not had the chance to really take it out on the highway to run its legs, if you know what I mean. So far, however, I'm quite impressed. The OS is quite tastey in low light situations, though the focus in day light hours is sometimes not spot on. The lens has to search a bit more than what I'm used to..over time I may figure out what this issue is. I say this, because thus far my pictures have been...

I say this, because thus far my pictures have been half/half good sharp, crystal clear and others are soft when cropped at 100%. I'm using the lens on a Canon 400D, for reference. The lens is a little more heavy, than I expected and on my 400D it's slightly off balance. Adding an additional battery pack seems to balance out the lens more. I feel for it's lower price, when compared to some of the Canon lenses, I've seemed to get my money's worth, already. It's a great upgrade lens for the mid-range to semi-professional photographer. I think it's not quite ready for the professionals to have in their arsenal, however. I will try to post more, once I've put it through it's paces.

I am on my 2nd lens and am getting Er99

I have had ERR99 on two lenses now, the first, and a replacement. This random ERR99 error, requires turning off the camera, or removing the battery. When this happens, no picture is taken. The lens can work for a dozen shots, then suddently begin acting up. It happens on all modes, with a newly charged battery, and with the OS turned off! I am using this on a Canon Digital Rebel Xti, which works flawlessly with it's kit lens, and also worked great on a Sigma 18-200 without the OS that I tried...

Overall a good lens but not great

By

from Austin, Tx  -  Photo Enthusiast

I'm not a pro but I shoot a lot of pictures, 3700 on last 18 day vacation. I shoot with a Canon T1i. The lens is a good compromise for carrying one instead of multiple lens. Performance is good and image quality is good especially at lower focal lengths. However, it's heavy but this does give it a nice rugged feel. Almost like carrying multiple lens anyway. Lens developed creep after several months where if you don't lock the lens at 18mm it will extend to full length while hanging around your neck. Bummer. This also impacts shooting multiple pixs at same focal length if you let camera hang. It also makes a low buzzing sound whenever the camera is on, Sigma tech said this is normal. Focusing is rather loud too. Didn't notice an impact on battery life though but how would you tell. Low battery and this lens will try but won't focus. In hindsight I'd should have went for the 250mm, often found myself looking for a little more length. This lens will work for most amateurs.

I love this lens!

I used this lens while hiking in our beautiful Colorado Mountains. Much better then the 18-55 lens for outdoor pictures. It does get heavy when you are hiking long distances, but the pictures are so worth the effort. I am so glad I got this lens! I cannot wait to use it again!

Good All Around Lens

By

from Glens Falls, NY  -  Semi-pro Photographer

This is a good all around lens for wide to moderate telephoto. I bought it to take on vacation with me so I would have one lens that could do most everything. The only issue I have is with the IS. I have other image stabilized lenses and I can tell when they are working (you get that "sea-sick" kind of effect as it's kicking in). This one seems more subtle or is not as strong.

Of course, not as good as a higher end lens, but great - great - great lens for the $$.
