About Sigma 19mm F/2.8

The Sigma 19mm F2.8 EX DN is a high-performance wide angle lens designed exclusively for mirrorless interchangeable lens cameras and has the equivalent angle of view as a 38mm (35mm equivalent focal length) on the Micro Four Thirds systems and 28.5mm (35mm equivalent focal length) on the E-mount systems.

Three glass mold aspherical lenses provide excellent correction for distortion, color aberration and field curvature. The inner focusing system corrects the fluctuation of aberration to maintain image quality regardless of the focal distance. Sigma's Super Multi-Layer Coating reduces flare and ghosting and provides sharp and high contrast images even at the maximum aperture. The superior telecentric optical design improves image quality throughout the frame.

This lens benefits from a newly developed linear AF motor which moves the lens elements directly without the need for gears or the drive of other mechanical parts. This system ensures accurate and quiet autofocusing, making the lens suitable for video recording as well as still photos. The lens features a rounded 7 blade diaphragm creating an attractive blur to the out of focus areas of the image.

This Sigma 19mm F2.8 EX DN has a minimum focusing distance of 20cm/7.9in and a maximum magnification ratio of 1:7.4.

Best bang for the buck

Very sharp wide open, with some soft edges. Stop down to f/4-f/5.6 and you will be amazed at how sharp this lens is. Best bang for the buck, comes with case and lens hood.

Good Option for NEX 5

By

from Houston Texas  -  Hobbyist/Enthusiast

I bought this lens for my Nex-5 and it works as I would expect it to. I like the way it looks attached to the camera, auto focus is fine and the manual ring feel fine as well. I agree that its a sharper image than the sony 16 2.8 kit. Great value in my opinion. I have no con's to relay in this review.

This lens does exactly what I wanted it to do - inexpensive wide angle with better quality than the standard kit lens.

Excellent lens for the money

By

These have apparently been discontinued by Sigma. They are, however, apparently, the same lens as the new versions and they are quite cheap when you buy the 19mm and the 30mm together, roughly $100 each. I have not seen a better prime lens for the NEX at that price, even vintage glass and a adapter is as much or more and the Sigma's, unlike vintage glass, will autofocus.

Great Lens for shooting indoors

By

Great lens replacement for the original Sony lenses for a very good price. It allows for low light pictures with great detail and great flexibility. Using f/2.8 gives a great DOF effect !!

Interesting lens

By

from LA, CA  -  Semi-Professional

I purchased this lens off [@], Adorama sent it well packed and fast. Adorama also extends the warrenty by a year which is a plus in my book. The lens comes with a lens hood, front and rear caps and padded carrying case. The lens finish is excellent and it is light weight. Summary: For the price this is a good lens for me, but maybe not you.Now for the review: When I compare this lens with the kit zoom that came with the Sony 5N, I am not sure I am gaining that much with the Sigma. Outside of the Sigma lens having a little faster optics, it does not have Optical stabilization nor does the 5N offer optical correction for it. In my opinion, the kit lens OSS comphensates for the slower optics. Image quality appears to be about the same, in that I cannot tell the two apart on my 27" LCD screen or in the prints. [Then again I am not a pixel counting techno freak who shoots test targets using a tripod.] I think the Sigma lens can focus closer than the kit zoom lens, but it is not a macro lens and I can crop the kit lens image and still have a usable photograph. So why only four stars? When the lens is off the camera or mounted on the camera when powered off, the linear focusing motor inside the lens is free to move around. That when you hold the lens in your hand and move the hand side to side you will feel something clunking inside. According to the lens instructions this is normal for this lens, but it is distrubing none the less when you first take it out of the box. My first reaction not knowing this was the lens was broken. That left a bad first impression on me, that you can avoid now that you now about it should you buy this or the 30mm cousin lens. The bottom line is if you already own the Sony 5N kit zoom lens I could not recommend this lens to you since the speed and IQ difference does not appear to be enough to warrent the purchase. But if you are one of those rare people who do not have the kit lens and afford the Zeiss 1.4 lens or like prime lenses over zoom lenses like myself, then I can recommend this lens to you.
