About Sigma 50mm F/1.4

The Sigma 50mm F1.4 DG HSM Art is a pro-level performer for full-frame DSLRs and is ideal for many types of videography and photography, including portraits, landscapes, studio work and still-life. It has been redesigned and re-engineered with SLD glass and has been optimized for rich peripheral brightness, with improved large aperture performance by positioning wide elements into the front groups.

Other updates to this lens include an optimized autofocus algorithm for smoother focusing and a floating focusing system to reduce lens movement while focusing. Under the Global Vision line, it features a new matte finish, an updated AF algorithm and every lens undergoes Sigma's proprietary modulation transfer function (MTF) "A1" testing before being shipped. It has 13 elements in eight groups, compared to the previous eight elements in six groups, and it also has improved close focusing at 15.7 inches and a maximum magnification ratio of 1:5.6.

The 50mm F1.4 incorporates Sigma's Hyper Sonic Motor (HSM) system to produce quiet, high-speed auto focus. In addition, it includes Super Multi-Layer Coating to reduce flare and ghosting, and to ensure the highest-quality images.

USB Dock Compatibility
Sigma has developed special software (SIGMA Optimization Pro) that can update the lens firmware and adjust parameters such as focus.
*USB Dock is sold separately.

Excellent 50mm lens

This is a very good 50mm 1.4 lens. I use it with the 5d3. I have not made any adjustment with the USB dock yet as I got the WRONG mount! But out of the box, the lens is very sharp. Great color and contrast. If you buy this lens, I hope you use it at 1.4 to maximize its greatness. I have rented the Canon 1.2 before and it was good but it is not as sharp as this lens. This lens is a must have for 50mm focal length user.

Great ergonomics & art work for artists. I use it at events to capture various items (rings, floral exquisite floral arrangements, etc).

Sharp Lens with set backs

By

from Findlay, Oh

I use this on my Canon 6d. This is by far the sharpest lens I've ever used. It doesn't focus as sharp on the outer edges. When you use your outer focus points, it struggles to keep up with Canon's L series lenses. But overall I would recommend this lens as a cheaper alternative to the Canon 50mm 1.2L.

Finally! A Canon 50mm f/1.4 Replacement

By

from Atlanta, GA

USE: Everything and anything for low-light and dramatic day-time photography. PROS: Spectacular MTF optical clarity like the Zeiss. Beautiful bokeh. Great build and ergonomics. No plastic feel. Solid and accurate internal focus system. Great advantage over the Canon 50mm f/1.4. Wider field of view than the Canon 50mm f/1.4. CONS: Much longer and heavier than the Canon 50mm f/1.4; however, given the optical improvements, the size naturally has to increase in order to output the proper results (so not really anything to complain about).

The Bokeh is extra creamy, and this lens is the sharpest one I've ever used. Canon 6d Portraits

Hard to beat

By

from Maine

I recently purchased this based on discussion forums and test results. It replaces a Nikon 50 1.4G. While I only have a couple hundred snaps with it, I can safely say that the focus speed is faster than the 50 1.4G and it is sharper in every situation. Particularly sharp at 1.4 vs the Nikon. Bokeh is surprisingly good, especially with a near subject and distant background. It may not have the super soft bokeh look of the Nikon 58 1.4 but it is quite fine. From what I can tell, bokeh depends on aperture and subject distance and you may want to read objective comparisons (if you can find them) on the subject. I will say that I like the bokeh more than the 50 1.4G. Sharpness? Really can't be beat at this focal length except the manual focus Zeiss Otus. I love it for informal portraits and find myself gravitating toward it more and more. While it is big for a 50, it balances nicely with a D800. Some complain about the 77mm filter but I have many large lenses with that same size so it is a plus for me.

Purchase use. Very good from F/2.2. Front focus 1.4-2.0. After 2.2 have litle back focus. From f4 focus is perfect. Work very well in life view with Canon 60D. Mutch better than Canon 50/1.8.Very happy.

superb lens!

By

from La Grulla, Tx

When I got this lens from the box it felt like a tank, its solid and the quality is amazing, very heavy though. I can compare the weight to the Canons 24-105 L 4.0 lens, but its worth evey pound in weight because its the glass and the glass is as sharp as a double edge sword. At 1.4 it hits the target time after time. Focuses great and its the best portrait lens as of now for the price point. I am glad I bought it. If your looking for this gem order it, you have nothing to lose, but gain. These are backed up so if you order you might not receive this lens till about 3 months due to popular demand.

Very good lens

By

from Northern Cali

This is probably HIGHEST rated lens I seen. Now I expected a lot from this lens because I read so many positive reviews. #1 YES it's pretty sharp. #2 and YES I really like how fast it grabs focus. No complains there. I do feel it's little heavy for 50mm prime. When I hold camera I'm use to camera body being little heavier than lens and camera in my hands tilts back little bit, with this lens it tilts forward a bit. By the way it's not a BIG deal, don't let this scare you. It's not 70-200 II lens :) it's not heavy. I'm just used to prime lenses being super light :). Other wise Sigma is amazing!!!
