Telephoto zoom lens with excellent cost performance and optimised for use with digital SLR cameras

Capable of macro photography, this lens has a 1:2 maximum close-up magnification at the 300 mm focal length. It's the ideal high performance lens for portraits, sports photography, nature photography, and other types of photography that frequently use the telephoto range.

SLD (Special Low Dispersion) glass
We used SLD (Special Low Dispersion) glass in this lens for excellent correction of chromatic aberration. This also corrects for fluctuation of aberration due to focusing. The new multi layer lens coating reduces flare and ghosting, a common problem with digital cameras and also creates an optimum colour balance.

Macro shooting with maximum magnification 1:2
The minimum focusing distance is 1.5 m/59 inches at all zoom settings. It also has a switch for changeover to macro photography at focal lengths between 200mm and 300mm with a maximum close-up magnification from 1:2.9 to 1:2.

Without changing the distance between camera and subject, you can change the shooting magnification

you get what you pay for.

I couldn't believe the price for this lens. I've used Signma lenses before and I thought they were as good as other lneses. the price was right, I purchased this lens to go with my new Nikon D7100. I was disappointed, the pictures didn't have the crispness I was hoping for. the same lense by Nikon cost 3X more. I am returning this lens and already have purchased the Nikon lens. It's a transformative experience. You get what you pay for. there is no magic feather balancing quality and price. Don't get me wrong, the Sigma was everything I could expect of a lens that costs 1/3rd the manufacturers standard product. On a related note, don't get too good a lens as now every picture I've previously taken is a pale comparison to quality pictures I'm getting with the manufacturers lens.

Good lens, great price.

I do mostly nature photography. This lens along side similar lenses performs well and the price is well below what I have paid for my Nikkor lenses. It is light, quick and appears to be sharp on the computer screen. I have not made any large prints yet.

Really good lens for its price.

By

from Pinon Hills, CA  -  Photography Student

I mainly use this to shoot local birds and small critters with the use of the macro/telephoto function. This lens is very sharp. It's actually sharper than my kit 18-55mm lens that came on my D3100. The lens is a little soft at 4-5.6, but gets really sharp at f8. The lens has some weight to it and it feels pretty solid. The macro function works between 200-300mm and still produces sharp results! I am extremely happy with this lens. So sharpness, contrast, and its macro function are all positive. It's a very good lens. Now, the only thing that I am not too fond of is the focusing time. If you're using auto focus, the motor takes awhile to focus, but it gets the job done. The motor itself is a little loud. Other than that, it's a really good lens for its price and I highly recommend it to others looking for a great telephoto/macro lens at a bargain price.

Excellent lens

By

from Tucson, AZ  -  Photo Enthusiast

This is the second of this particular lens I have purchased, and for the price it is certainly worth it. After I dropped my lens, I had considered several others that were considerably more expensive and faster, but after careful consideration I chose to got with this lens, considering all the great photos I got with my previous lens. The optics are good throughout the range, and the close focusing capabilities are one of the major reasons I love this lens. I do confess, the major drawback is the noise, and it is not particularly fast, but for shooting from a distance it should not present a problem.

Excellent construction and versatility

Professional photographer taking flora and fauna. Sometimes use with a 1-4 teleconverter and lens works well in AF with it

Don't judge this lense by the price.

By

from cleveland,Tn  -  Photo Enthusiast

This is fantastic value for an entry level zoom lens. I use it on my Nikon D3100. Yes, the auto focus is a little slow, and it is a bit noisy however I can not be happier with this purchase. I wanted a telephoto lense, since I only have the 18-55mm kit lens the D3100 came with. After reading review after review, I pulled the trigger on this one, and happy that I did.

Pretty Good For a 'Cheap' Lens.

By

from Daly City, CA  -  Photo Enthusiast

This Sigma lens is well built and feel solid. I am impressed by its quality considering the price I paid for it. The auto-focus is noisy and slow, but it gets the job done. Macro is down to 1:2 @300mm, very useful for taking macro pix of flowers, gritters and pets. You have a 3+ feet working distance. With the 9-blade diaphragm aperture construction, it makes a fine portrait lens with pleasing Bokeh. However, I would not recommend it for Sports or Hyperactive kids.

Great zoom telephoto lens for the money

By

Using this lens all the time with the 18-55mm one. Takes great photos and the price is affordable. Although, it doesn't come with VR.

Helen O  This item is designed for Pentax Autofocus cameras. You can find the Nikon mount version here: http://www.adorama.com/SG70300DLNKA.html. (while the Nikon version should mount properly, there may be limited functionality with this particular lens)
Shopper  Hello, Does this lens have 5 or 7 silver contact points on the inside where it connects to the camera? I recently bought and returned a lens similar to this one from Amazon because the lens was not compatible with my newer Pentax K-X camera. Do you know if this is a newer version of lens? Thank you, Heather Kelley
VICKI L P  This lens has five (5) silver contacts and works on my K7. There are also two dots, one white and one red. These don't appear to be contact points though. If I remember correctly, lens that fit K7 should also fit your K-X. Hope this helps.
