High ratio zoom lens housed in a compact construction and incorporating Sigma's original OS (Optical Stabilizer) function.
This telephoto zoom lens incorporates Sigma's original OS (Optical Stabilizer) function and is housed in a compact construction. TheOS function offers the use of shutter speeds approximately 4 stops slower than would otherwise be possible. The SLD (Special Low Dispersion) glass element provides excellent correction for all types of aberrations. High image quality is assured throughout the entire zoom range. The Super Multi-Layer Coating reduces flare and ghosting and provides high contrast images throughout the focal range. This lens has a minimum focusing distance of 150cm (59.1") throughout the entire zoom range and a maximum magnification ratio of 1:3.9, making it ideal for close-up photography
SIGMA's own unique OS (Optical Stabilizer) technology
This lens is equipped with Sigma's own unique OS (Optical Stabilizer) function. This system offers the use of shutter speeds approximately 4 stops slower than would otherwise be possible. It makes telephoto shooting easy for many types of photography such as sport and nature. For Sony and Pentax mount, the built-in OS function of this lens can be used even if the camera body is equipped with an anti-shake function. As compensation for camera shake is visible in the view finder, the photographer can easily check for accurate focus and ensure there is no subject movement.
* For Pentax and Sony mount, it is not possible to use AF and stabilizer function (OS) when attaching to film SLR, Pentax ist* series and K100D DSLR cameras.

This lens has a rounded 9 blade diaphragm which creates an attractive blur to the out of focus areas
Minimum focusing distance of 150cm (59.1") at all focal lengths
This lens has a minimum focusing distance of 150cm (59.1") throughout the entire zoom range and a maximum magnification ratio of 1:3.9, making it ideal for close-up photography
Large-sized lens hood
The lens is supplied with a large-sized lens hood to block out extraneous light and reduce internal reflections.
I couldn't believe the price for this lens. I've used Signma lenses before and I thought they were as good as other lneses. the price was right, I purchased this lens to go with my new Nikon D7100. I was disappointed, the pictures didn't have the crispness I was hoping for. the same lense by Nikon cost 3X more. I am returning this lens and already have purchased the Nikon lens. It's a transformative experience. You get what you pay for. there is no magic feather balancing quality and price. Don't get me wrong, the Sigma was everything I could expect of a lens that costs 1/3rd the manufacturers standard product. On a related note, don't get too good a lens as now every picture I've previously taken is a pale comparison to quality pictures I'm getting with the manufacturers lens.
I do mostly nature photography. This lens along side similar lenses performs well and the price is well below what I have paid for my Nikkor lenses. It is light, quick and appears to be sharp on the computer screen. I have not made any large prints yet.
I mainly use this to shoot local birds and small critters with the use of the macro/telephoto function. This lens is very sharp. It's actually sharper than my kit 18-55mm lens that came on my D3100. The lens is a little soft at 4-5.6, but gets really sharp at f8. The lens has some weight to it and it feels pretty solid. The macro function works between 200-300mm and still produces sharp results! I am extremely happy with this lens. So sharpness, contrast, and its macro function are all positive. It's a very good lens. Now, the only thing that I am not too fond of is the focusing time. If you're using auto focus, the motor takes awhile to focus, but it gets the job done. The motor itself is a little loud. Other than that, it's a really good lens for its price and I highly recommend it to others looking for a great telephoto/macro lens at a bargain price.
This is the second of this particular lens I have purchased, and for the price it is certainly worth it. After I dropped my lens, I had considered several others that were considerably more expensive and faster, but after careful consideration I chose to got with this lens, considering all the great photos I got with my previous lens. The optics are good throughout the range, and the close focusing capabilities are one of the major reasons I love this lens. I do confess, the major drawback is the noise, and it is not particularly fast, but for shooting from a distance it should not present a problem.
used it on to take pictures of a barn a 1/4 of a mile away. did a great job. barn edges were straight, very clear, weight don't even notice. Keeps up great with moving trains.
Professional photographer taking flora and fauna. Sometimes use with a 1-4 teleconverter and lens works well in AF with it
This is fantastic value for an entry level zoom lens. I use it on my Nikon D3100. Yes, the auto focus is a little slow, and it is a bit noisy however I can not be happier with this purchase. I wanted a telephoto lense, since I only have the 18-55mm kit lens the D3100 came with. After reading review after review, I pulled the trigger on this one, and happy that I did.
This Sigma lens is well built and feel solid. I am impressed by its quality considering the price I paid for it. The auto-focus is noisy and slow, but it gets the job done. Macro is down to 1:2 @300mm, very useful for taking macro pix of flowers, gritters and pets. You have a 3+ feet working distance. With the 9-blade diaphragm aperture construction, it makes a fine portrait lens with pleasing Bokeh. However, I would not recommend it for Sports or Hyperactive kids.

Using this lens all the time with the 18-55mm one. Takes great photos and the price is affordable. Although, it doesn't come with VR.
