iMAC and Sony Handycam DCR-SR87

The 12-31-09 review on here was a great help in that you can connect this camera to the Mac with iMovie and get iMovie to import the video. Just have the camera power off when you connect the USB port to your Mac and then turn on the camera. It is also possible to copy Sony video from the pc to the Mac but you need the mpeg-2 playback component (cost is $20) and then convert sony video to .mov files and they play fine. Apple support forum was a great help in getting my Sony camcorder and video to work with the Mac computer...it can be done but please send your notes to Sony asking them to provide Mac software support in the future. Love the Sony products but they need to also support the Mac community.

For Mac users

Although it took a little while to figure out, I've been able to use this camcorder with a Mac without any problem. These are the steps I've taken, hope they help! 1) Open iMovie on your Mac 2) Open camcorder cover to expose USB port 3) Turn "off" camcorder by pressing power button 4) Plug in USB connection between Mac and camcorder 5) Press power button on camcorder to turn back on The Mac automatically found the camcorder and allowed us to follow options to import video. Again, hope this helps. Good luck!

Mac users will be DISAPPOINTED.

The camcorder itself is GREAT. However, if you are a Mac user, THIS CAMCORDER IS USELESS. The Handycam is only supported by Windows, making it impossible (as far as I know) to upload photos/videos directly from the unit to your Mac.

Where's The Remote??? Nighshot???

I used to love Sony products. They still make one of the best TV's out there and their camcorders have always been excellent. The DCR-SR87 misses the gate with a flawed design in that there is no remote (self-video) and it stinks at night or dawn. I love the hybrid effect of both Memory Stick and its hard drive. There are better camcorders by Sony or for that matter, from Canon.

Good camcorder, but not enough

The camcorder is really good, but there is a couple of things that sony forgot: There is no nightshot video lens, you can´t use it at night. If you use a usb cable to transfer the video direct to your computer, the date and time don´t show on the computer screen, for that you have to use the RCA cable. You don´t have a remote control. The resolution on the photo camera is just 1 megapixel.

DCR-SR87 HDD Does It Great

I have never used a camcorder before. My main purpose for this purchase was two fold. One, a great way to capture my grandchildren growing up and just as importantly was I needed a camera as well with ZOOM capabilities. This product fit the bill with 25X optical and 200X digital. I take still pic's of markings on collectibles that I sell in my part-time business. since I have never used a camcorder, I fugured with all the features available to me, I'd get lost just reading the operating manual. WRONG. This beauty has an "easy" button to get you up and running taking pic's right after you get this puppy out of the box. The controls are simple to use in "easy" mode. Resolution is perfect for my applications and the ZOOM capabilities are awesome. Much more that I expected to be truthful. I am glad I made the purchase and thus far, the pic's and video I have taken has met or exceeded my expectations 5X. Light weight, easy to use and has more features than I'll ever need.

Design Flaw

This camcorder would be perfect except Sony designers did not think to include the convenience of the remote commander device. It allows the user to operate the camcorder from a distance. It's included with other Sony camcorders, why not this model? 9 out of 10 users for a camcorder prefer to have a remote device for their camcorder. A very big flaw for an almost perfect Handicam!!!!
