Often, you want to balance light intensity between two areas within a scene. This is important outdoors to allow more sky detail while properly exposing the foreground. Exposing for the foreground will produce a washed-out, over-exposed sky, exposing for the sky will leave the foreground dark, underexposed.

what can i say, it performs its function
Anyone beginning in landscape photography should consider a graduated neutral density filter. for some conditions it solves the problem. For others it eases the use of editting software.
I needed to balance bright sky lighting, since we have little haze in Colorado, with a contrasted foreground. What a great filter to mimic the human eye.
