Often, you want to balance light intensity between two areas within a scene. This is important outdoors to allow more sky detail while properly exposing the foreground.
Exposing for the foreground will produce a washed-out, over-exposed sky, exposing for the sky will leave the foreground dark, underexposed. By using the color graduate ND, the ability to balance both areas at once is provided.
Tiffen Digital HT® Filters
Made from the purest optical quality glass and Tiffen's award-winning ColorCore technology, Tiffen Digital HT - High Transmission - filters offer a new breakthrough in multi-coating technology.
Imagine, a double-sided coated filter with the strength of titanium, unmatched scratch-resistant durability and worry-free cleaning.

Not with the Digital HT filters - the secret is in the titanium coating that makes it extremely durable and protects against damage and mark up.
And that's not all these High Transmission filters feature a low profile titanium finish ring and anti-reflective black lock ring, with a distinctive titanium finish that sets these filters apart from the rest.
Digital HT filters are made in the USA and come with a 10-year warranty, your guarantee of quality assurance.

My favorite filter
This is the filter I use more often. I think that if I had one of those square graduated NDs I would end up not using filters at all. This filter mounts like your conventional filters. And who cares really if you then have to crop your file a bit so that you get the horizon exactly where you want it. Digital SLRs now have more than enough resolution to crop. A clear winner.

One problem is the filter is actually two parts. One ring attaches to the camera and the other rotates to allow the gradient feature to rotate to cover the area for darkening. The attachment part has a griping part but it is level with the rotating ring. Would be nice if it was slightly larger for better griping
This is a wonderful filter for the bright skies in Arizona. Also leaves the rest of your image unchanged.
I love this - it is a simple and inexpensive graduated filter that screws right onto the lens. It rotates smoothly. Even though it didn't look that way, the gradation is really subtle - no obvious line. Watch your metering or bracket though. I didn't notice any off-coloring, but I've only used it for sunset shots. I would like one that is even darker.
The Tiffen Digital HT color graduated filter is a coveted assessory for landscape work, especially with overly bright skies and background. This particular Tiffen component is excellent quality and construction.
I use this to help darken skys for better dynamic range. The only problem with it is your horizon is pretty much fixed becuase there is no adjustment on the filter unlike a Cokin system which I find much better.
exactly what I was looking for to tone down the sky to even the exposure for twilight time exposures... have used it successfully in combination with other ND filters. constructive suggestion - mark the filter on the ring to idendify the horizon - this filter is not always in front.
This ia an excellent quality graduated ND filter... a must have for any serious landscape photographer. You will not be disappointed.

I use this for landscapes and it works well.
Great filter. It's like a pair of sunglasses for your camera. It really cuts down on the light and brings out the details that were blown-out by sunlight.
