About Tiffen

Controlling contrast is difficult in bright sunlit exteriors. Exposing for either highlights or shadows will leave the other severely under-or over-exposed.

Ultra Contrast Filter
Tiffen was recognized with a Technical Achievement Award from the Academy of Motion Picture Arts & Sciences for the innovative design of this popular Motion Picture and TV filter. It uses the surrounding ambient light, not just light in the image area, to evenly lighten shadows throughout. Use it where contrast control is needed without any other effect on sharpness or highlight flare being apparent.

Tiffen Features

  • Works with surrounding ambient light
  • Captures details lost in shadows
  • Lowers contrast evenly throughout image
  • No flare or halation
  • Lets you "see" more

Questions about this item:

George M  Is this what you use when shooting indoors to avoid windows flaring out? Can you use it with HDR?
JEFFREY K  I think you may be right about that. I'd double check in the message boards before purchasing. I bought the ultra contrast to basically lower the image's contrast and soften the light. If you want an idea of the effect you will get, watch Kubrick's "Barry Lyndon" or "Eyes Wide Shut".
George M  I should be so lucky as to have something look like Barry Lyndon (I worked with his DP once, but forgot the guys name). I have a 1, and I love it. It takes the curse off of that hard digital look. I use HDR a lot for the windows, but I thought a 3 might be worth having. The windows are very tough, and my clients can't afford to silk them off or use gels. I miss film. Thanks for your help. GM
