Often, you want to balance light intensity between two areas within a scene. This is important outdoors to allow more sky detail while properly exposing the foreground. Exposing for the foreground will produce a washed-out, over-exposed sky, exposing for the sky will leave the foreground dark, underexposed.

TIFFEN Brand Filters: Quality at a reasonable price point. Love them.
To add depth to your landscape shot and not have the sky blown out or the forground loose shadow detail a graduated filter is a must.
Yes, you can do a lot in photoshop, you always do. However, when you get it right, when you take the shot, the results are always better. ND-Grads are a must. Below a #6, not worth it. Now you can expose/focus on the subject highlights without blowing out the sky..... Also, tip, most wide angle zooms will "vinette" with multiple filters (UV+ND)get a larger ND with step ring....no need to constantly remove UV
I go to the beach twice a month to shoot sunrise's, the filter takes care of the bright horizon allowing me to shoot with the proper exposure. I've been looking for this filter for a few months and came across it on the web-site. This is THE number one filter for me at sunrise.
