The SP AF17-50mm f/2.8 is a lightweight, compact, fast standard zoom lens designed exclusively for digital SLR cameras, expanding the product concept of the popular SP AF28-75mm f/2.8 zoom lens.

In addition, portrait shots are made beautiful with the natural out-of-focus effect characteristic provided by the fast f/2.8 aperture. Additionally, a broader photographic expression through the use of faster shutter speeds as a result of the maximum aperture offers enhanced photographic pleasure. The lens boasts one of the best close-up shooting performances in the class of fast standard zoom lenses designed exclusively for digital cameras and featuring an f/2.8 maximum aperture throughout the entire zoom range, to ensure stress-free photographic shots at all focal lengths and distances.

Lens Cap Won't Fit

from Kansas City  -  Casual Photographer

I have no issues with the lens, but the lens cap does not fit on over the filter offered with this kit. I would not recommend the extra money for the kit. Just get the lens.

Fantastic Lens

from Houston, TX  -  Photo Enthusiast

After purchasing the Sigma 50mm 1.4 I was frustrated with my only wide angle option, a Nikon 18-55mm 3.5-5.6. I just was not getting the quality I'd seen others get on my same camera (D7000). I began looking at options, and ran across this lens. The price and reviews really had me excited, so I ordered a used copy. This lens is FANTASTIC. I really feel like I'll get many more years out of my camera thanks to the sharp image quality this lens affords me. I don't regret this purchase at all, and I especially recommend getting used gear from Adorama. The lens came exactly as they had rated it and I could not be happier.

Very happy with choice

from SE Washington  -  Photo Enthusiast

This 17-50mm lens was bought used from Adorama and I am very happy with it. It's the first lens I've bought beyond the kit Sony SAL 18200mm lens and I immediately saw the difference in the quality of the images varying from landscapes to grandkids playing at Christmas. It is heavier than the 18200 lens, but it's a great trade-off to get better quality images.

Nice Lens

from Austin  -  Pro Photographer

I have owned this lens for some time and I think it's a solid choice with a couple of drawbacks. If you get a good deal on it, it just may be the best bang for your buck lens on a crop sensor camera. It's designed for use only on Crop-sensor bodies by the way. The optics are nice, and I believe it compares favorably to Canon L glass, especially for the price. However, the AF motor is quite noisy. If you're shooting a wedding in a church or something, it's definitely too loud. For the casual user, maybe it's not a big deal. From my understating, the version with stabilization is somewhat flawed as you have to wait a moment for the stabilization to engage, and if you don't it can actually make your shots more blurry. And at f2.8 in this focal length, IS is usually not a deal breaker. I have not used mine too much lately only because I primarily shoot full frame these days, but I think that this is an overall nice piece of glass and I can get use out of it for video as well because of the relatively fast f2.8 aperture.

Great Lens!!!!

from Columbus, OH  -  Pro Photographer

I've only had this for 2 weeks but have used it for a wedding and my family sessions! I love the crisp shots I've been getting and the wide range it has! Great lens for the price!

from New York  -  Semi-pro Photographer

Acquiring reference images on the fly requires a dependable lens. For someone who uses a camera for both documentary and creative needs, this Lens delivers superb possibilities. Despite its limlted zoom range, its fine optics compensates for this set back.

Too much back focus

from Massachusetts  -  Photo Enthusiast

This is my first Tamron and also my first business with Adorama. The lens was delivered a day earlier than promised. I used it on my D7000, try to take the advantage of a $75 coupon offer. It's the version with built-in motor. Its focusing is quick enough, just like the speed of my beloved Nikon 18-200 and the noise is bearable. But it has too strong back focus from 17mm to about 35mm, rendering this lens almost unusable at wider apertures within this range. The back focus disappears at 50mm and gives pretty sharp image at center even with aperture wide open at 2.8. I fine tuned the autofocus in-camera up to -18 to give acceptable results at 17mm-2.8, but then at 50mm it's not focusing right and gives blurry pictures. After 500+ pictures, I also discovered that the left side one-sixth of the picture seems always more blurry then the right side. I've sent back the lens and Adorama promptly gave me the refund. The customer representative handling my call was great. I will do business with Adorama again.

Pretty good and solid lens

from San diego  -  Photography Student

Overall, the lens is a solid and reliable lens. It feels very durable but is on the slightly heavier side. It comes with a lens hood which is helpful. The only real problem i had was with the auto-focus, sometimes its really hard to change the focus of the autofocus. It doesnt work very well in low-light situations either. The bokeh is not too bad, at f2.8 you still get that blur and fuzz.

Great lens!!!
