A lot of bang for the buck

I have many macro and portrait lenses, but this is one of my favorites. I seldom leave for a shoot without it. Doesn't hunt for focus, finds it quickly. I've used this lens for night photography as well as macro and portraiture. The color rendition and saturation are excellent. This is the only Tokina I own, liked it so much, I bought one for my adult Daughter.

Most underrated lens

This lens is amazingly sharp. It is very well made. For the price, you can't beat it. Auto focus is not very fast but I don't need fast auto focus for what I use this lens for. I mainly use it for ring shots and in weddings and sometimes for portraits. Worth every penny. I would definitely recommend this lens.

Excellent lens for macro and portrait

Excellent sharpness wide open. I expected to try it and return it because I was skeptical but this lens is solid all the way. On my D500, it doesn't focus as fast as my other Nikon prime lenses but a small price to pay for this level of sharpness

Working to learn to focus...

I like this lens so far. I'm new to macro photography and portraits. So far it has been great for the portraits but learning how to use this for macro shots has proven more challenging. The lens tends to have very sharp focus but not for the entire image. For example a flower maybe very sharp on a few leafs but not the entire flower. I'm not sure if that's just operator error or what...for the price it's a great product.

Fantastic lens and a great Non Nikon prime lens

Fast to focus....auto and manual, very sharp edge to edge and it has become my portrait shooting goto lens. Macro is a bonus!

Sharpest Macro Out There!

I got this lens in June of 2016 after being highly recommended by someone on YouTube. I took a chance and this is, in my opinion, one of the best and sharpest lenses I have ever owned. These are the pros and cons as I see them. I hope this helps out potential buyers. PROS 1. Price. No other Macro beats the bang for buck of this lens. 2. Build Quality. It is built solidly, not old AI/-S full metal build, but it’s solid. The included lens hood is very nice and clicks securely into place. 3. 2.8 Max aperture. This means you’ll get great subject separation and the blur is beautiful. 4. Sharpness. This lens is one of the sharpest I’ve ever owned. The bargain of this lens is amazing; dare I say that the output is just that of Nikon f/1.4 G glass, definitely up to par with the Nikon 105mm 2.8G Micro, maybe even better! 5. Did I mention price? CONS 1. AF. The Auto-focus is not the fastest and definitely not up to Nikon pro level standards, that said, it’s not the slowest AF. It can perform at a pro gig like a wedding or just running after the kids. The only reason I am listing this as a con is because I want all to be aware that the focus speed is not pro grade, but it is NOT SLOW either. Just slower than pro grade lenses. It should be noted that engaging the limiter will make the lens auto focus a bit faster. 2. CA. Chromatic aberrations do show up in very high contrast areas. Nothing you can’t correct in post, but again, a heads up for potential buyers. 3. No weather sealing. This is nominal but if you’re outdoors a lot, this may be a deal breaker as the Nikon 105mm f2.8G Micro is weather sealed. 4. Max aperture. As with many Macro lenses the Max aperture gets smaller or larger in regards to the f number as you get closer to your subject. The Tokina has a max aperture of f/5.6 at closest focusing distance. In contrast, the Nikon 105mm f/2.8G Micro only stops down to f/4.8 at closest focus. I mention this because this is something else that some may consider a deal breaker. On the opposite side of the spectrum, the Tokina will stay at f/2.8 up till 6’ (approx. 1.8m), whereas the Nikon 105mm f/2.8G will stop down to f/3 at 10’ (approx. 3m). So the Tokina allows you to be 4’ (approx. 1.2m) closer to your subject at f/2.8 meaning better background blur. It’s only 1/3 of a stop so although not a big deal to me, it may be a big deal to some. I can think of nothing else except that I am VERY happy with the results and I see NO reason for the work I do, to buy the first party option. I hope this helps.

Amazing Performance at an Amazing Price

I purchased this lens from Adorama in 2016. It is an amazing value! It’s performance and utility equal the 105mm Micro Nikkor and from the rugged materials, weight, and construction standpoints, it is the better choice even if it were to be at a much higher price point. I mostly use this lens as a general purpose moderate telephoto with a second use for macro work. I use it on two full-frame sensor cameras (Nikon FX), a Nikon D750 and DF. For smaller sensor cameras, including Nikon DX, its effective focal length of 150mm may be too long for most portraits, although macro use will allow subjects to be not so close to the front lens element, a plus in my use. This is the only non-Nikon lens I own, or plan to own, and I was careful to read the user reviews and study the quality of the build and sharpness of the optics before my purchase. I also waited about five months for it to come back in-stock. After using this lens, I can say that all of the comments about it being a stellar optical performer are true, including its very low distortion. When shooting portraits, this lens is so sharp that it can reveal every flaw and blemish in your subject’s face, requiring some post-processing to soften or eliminate unwanted details. This lens has Tokina’s latest coating and I assume it is optimized for digital. In the company of my Nikkors, it also has excellent color and contrast. The Tokina in Nikon mount uses the Nikon AF screw drive system found in FX cameras and some DX cameras. Focusing is very fast but not as fast as some Nikkor AF-S lenses. However, even for sports, unless a user makes their living shooting fast action it should suit you. Focusing is precise in my use. The manual focus clutch is clever and comes in handy when doing macro and I found it to be intuitive and easy to get used to. The focus limiter is a great feature for me as it will lock to either end, short or long. I don’t use a hood with this lens as it hasn’t proven necessary with the front optics well recessed into the lens barrel. I do keep a UV multicoated filter on the lens full-time. For Nikon users, I use a 55-58mm step up ring so as to use 58mm filters across my smaller Nikkor Lenses. The non-rotating front filter thread is much appreciated when using polarizers. In my use, a 100mm focal length is covered by a Nikkor zoom I have, but the Tokina’s F2.8 speed allows for a faster aperture and shorter depth-of-field when needed. It fills in for 85 through 105mm fixed focal lengths. As well, it has a very pleasing bokeh. The lack of image stabilization in this lens may be a concern for some, but given the high ISOs now available (and with little degradation at the high ends) in recent cameras, I don’t see how this would be a deciding issue. For macro work, stabilization shouldn’t be needed or may even be unusable if on a tripod. I was concerned just before my purchase when a reviewer wrote that he was not able to access F2.8 on this Tokina lens when using it with his Nikon DF. He was able to open to no larger than F3.3. Skeptical, I bought the lens anyway. The first thing I did on receiving my lens was to mount it on my DF (and then my D750) to see if there were limitations in using its full range of apertures. On both cameras, I found the Tokina performs with all of it features and there are no operational limitations. On my DF, I further tried full manual operation using the whiz wheels and still found no limitations. The only thing I can surmise is that the reviewer was using this lens in macro mode where closer focusing and greater magnification cause a light fall-off and thus a reduction in the maximum aperture available (on any lens). The Tokina will have a maximum aperture of about F3.3 at a 1:6 magnification.

Such a great lens. Worth the money

I purchased this lens because I had heard great things about it, and I wanted to get more into the macro realm of photography. This lens is amazing and very underpriced for the level of quality in construction as well as optics. I would recommend this lens with no hesitation. The only problem is the autofocus does not work with the Nikon d3000 and d5000 series models. Still very worth it.

A must have lens

Well belt solid macro and portrait lens, it is sharp with nice colors, i use it with my Nikon D7200, a nice combination, yes you can hear the motor while the lens is focusing but nothing annoying at all, no VR but I seriously doubt that it would help when using the lens for macro photography, if used that close a tripod is almost a must to get the best result where Nikon tells you to turn the VR off when using a tripod!! so why pay for the VR? No other lens with this quality will beat the price of the Tokina, the nikon 105mm macro is 2 1/2 times the price of this lens, I haven't tried it but those who did said no difference found and actually some found the Tokina to be sharper with a nicer bokeh The 105 mm Sigma is almost twice the price the, Tameron is more expensive, so if the Tokina performs like the Nikon so why bother with other brands to start with?, the only thing I wish it was included is a carrying pouch like the leather pouch that came with my Old 18-85MM +MACRO lens for my old ME Super SLR Pentax, I recommend this lens for anyone interested in macrophotography and portraits actually since I got it I use it more than my Nikon 18-55mm VRll and Nikon 55-300mm VR, this Tokina is fun to use snd you can't help yourself but love it. This lens is almost backordered everywhere!! Does that say something?

Aperture issues

Got the lens because of price and good reviews. Optics are good. Autofocus is good. However, problems setting aperture to f/2.8 in A or M mode on a Nikon DF; sometimes it works, but usually can't change it below 3.3. There is an aperture ring on the lens, but if it's not locked to f/32, the camera will not allow shutter release, even with both lens and camera in manual mode. The instructions that came with the lens mention that but are otherwise rudimentary. Maybe there's something I haven't figured out, so I'll keep playing with it. If it were a more expensive lens I'd return it.

Great lens!

This is my 2nd Tokina Lens and I can easily say that they are as good or better than anything Tamron or Sigma sells. My only complaint with this order was that out said I would receive a Tiffen UV filter for the lens but instead I was shipped a Pro Optic brand. Not sure what the quality difference is but was disappointed that it wasn't as described. It won't keep me from doing business with Adorama in the future but I hope it's not something that is repeated.

One lens you'll never be sorry you purchased

This is as sharp as any lens I own and I have some pretty decent lenses including Nikon 60mm Macro, Sigma 180mm Macro, Nikon lenses: 24-70 f2.8, 50 f1.4, 85mm f2.8, 16-35 f4, 24mm f2.8, 35-105 + macro setting (I always considered this lens' macro setting to be equal with the 60 macro -- very good lens), and recently added a Sigma 24-105 f4. The new Sigma, the Nikon 24-70 and the Tokina 100 are all about the same sharpness -- my three best. I also like the way it changes from AF to Manual. You push or pull the focus ring to switch between the two. It makes it really convenient to AF on a subject, then pull the ring back to manually "tweek" the focus. Dollar for dollar, the best lens I own.

Everything I wanted in a macro

I use this lens as a prime on my d610 mainly shooting insects on flowers. I really like the jump ring from auto to manual focus. I normally will bring in the focus on auto and then jump to manual for the real close up, but with this lens and camera combo the auto focus seems to be spot-on.
