About Joby

The Joby Ballhead X allows creative camera positioning when mounted to your Gorillapod Focus. It is portable (only 9.3 oz, 262 g), compact (only 3.3", 83mm tall) and will support your equipment weighing up to 11.1 lb (5 kg). A unique feature of this device is its universal "x-shaped" mounting plate which connects to your camera and easily slides on and off the ballhead.

The Ballhead X is equipped with durable adjustment knobs which allow you to rotate your camera smoothly with full 360° panning and up to 90° tilts. Even though this ballhead is optimized for the Gorillapod Focus, it is also compatible with most tripods since it can accommodate both 1/4"-20 and 3/8"-16 threads. Additionally its durable aluminum construction has an all-black finish which minimizes reflectivity and gives it a professional look.

Makes the Gorillapod more usable

I use a Nikon D7000, which is 24 ounces, without a lens. Once I put the lens on and mount it on the Gorillapod with the Joby head, the functionality of the Gorillapod legs are strained. If I set the legs up in an upright position, it tips forward. It must be wrapped around something to make it more stable. Still, having the head on the legs is helpful to compose the photo.

simple, solid, economical

I use a Canon 70D, often paired with a 100-400 mm lens. I got the Joby Ballhead X to go with the heavy duty Gorillapod. I discovered it was every bit as solid and user friendly as a much more expensive unit, which made it economical to buy a second unit. This means I now have the same ballhead on my regular tripod as well, and a second quick release plate to go on the long lens collar. Everything is interchangeable. It's a great set up. The lock holds the camera in position even with the long lens zoomed out, so using the collar sin't absolutely necessary. The only drawback is that it doesn't have any build-in levels, but it does have a separate pan control.

Just bought my second one

By

I had one of these as part of my Gorillapod Focus setup. Holds fairly heavy equipment well, I have routinely used this as my main tripod setup with 5D series cameras and lenses op to Canon's 70-300 L without any problems. The compact size is a real winner for me, that's why I just bought a second one for on top of my DIY slider for motion timelapses, which replaces a Manfrotto 496rc2 that was stolen. I prefer an Arca-Swiss style clamp as this Ballhead supports. I now use one of these ballheads to support my slider as well as camera support on top of the slider. Great value, great compactness. Once accidentally got drowned in salt water which made the ball stick in place, needing a lot of force to get out of a locked position after loosening the knob. The head turned out to be easy to take apart and clean and is as new now. One nice feature of this head that I have not even had on some of my more expensive ballheads: the outer case is slotted on two sides so you can choose which direction to flip your camera. Seems minor, but it can be really awkward ending up with the tightening knob on the opposite side of the head!

Very well made product, ability to move camera in all possible directions. It's a bit bigger than I thought.

Surprisingly good and excellent value

By

I was pleasantly surprised with this head. Very smooth and excellent machining quality for the size and price. Annodizing quality of the metal is good with a nice satin low luster surface. The QR plate is nice and attaches easily to a camera without the need for a hex wrench or coin. The quick release is compatible with the Adorama F4 head (though the Joby plates are shorter - more square in size and less rectangular), Really Right Stuff, SwissAcra, etc. Being interchangeable is nice if you have various tripods for different needs or want an upgrade path to bigger ballheads that doesn't obsolete your spare QR plates. This is a very nice small ball head and is perfect for small lightweigth tripods and actually almost overkill for the Gorilla flexible leg thing that Joby often mates this with.

Clean and simple

This can be used instead of a tripod in many situations, and it's much easier to pack and carry.
