About Tiffen

These filters absorb Ultra Violet (UV) light. Film is more sensitive to Ultra Violet light than our eyes. This often shows up as a haze or a bluish cast, especially when shot from high altitudes and from long distances, particularly over water.

UV filters also help protect your lens from dust, moisture, fingerprints, scratches and damage from cleaning.

Since they absorb no normal light and have no effect on color or contrast, they can be kept on your lens at all times.

Tiffen Ultra Violet filters are available in a variety of absorbtion levels and sizes.

UV filter ---------- Standard UV. Most popular protection filter.
UV MC -------------- Multi coated for extra flare protection.
UV Warm ------------ Combines UV with Tiffen's '812' warming filter.
Haze 1 ------------- Absorbs 75% of UV light.
Haze 2 --------------Absorbs 100% of UV light.
Haze 15--------------Absorbs 81% of UV light.
Haze 16--------------Absorbs 86.5% of UV light
Haze 17 ------------ Absorbs almost all UV light.
UV Wide Angle Thin - UV filter for use with wide angle lenses.

Tiffen is Good

I put a Tiffen UV filter on all my lenses. I know purists may not agree, and yes if you search for studies any UV filter affects images. But I don't mind the unnoticeable affect of the Tiffen UV filter. I use it as protection. On 2 occasions, the UV filter has protected my lens. Once from sea water splashing onto shore and another from high humidity. Worth the money to protect lenses that are 5-20 times more expensive. Plus, I like to get down and dirty. So when I work fast, I sometimes shove...

So when I work fast, I sometimes shove lenses into my bag without the lens cap. But that's part of why I have UV filter on there. Again, sorry to the purists out there, but their my lenses and my images. You're free to do whatever you want.

I won't use it

I bought this filter for use on a 70-300 lens for a Nikon D2X. I should have sprung for a higher quality filter to go on a high quality lens. I need the filter to help protect the lens, but not compromise focus clarity. This filter, while being contructed well, leaves something to be desired in overall optical quality. I compared lots of shots with it on and off the camera, just to test it, and the image quality was affected with it in place. I will either shoot with no filter at all, or try ...

good cheap protective cover

By

from Cincinnati, OH  -  Tech Savvy

this is the type of filter you get simply for the purpose of protecting the lense. as a filter itself, it's not very effective as you will still get flaring when shooting directly into lights. but works for exactly what you need it to do.

Great uncoated protective filter!

By

from Rock Island, IL  -  Photo Enthusiast

It's pretty simple. Screw it on and forget about it. If you find yourself in a situation where your lens could easily get dirty or scratched, this filter is excellent. It's easy to clean too. If you're very picky about image quality or can't stand ghosting, you'll want a coated filter instead. This is cheap and it could end up saving your glass!

Questions about this item:

Shopper  Why Did You Choose This?
FRANK H  I use it as a protective cover since my lens caps disappear...
Shopper  have a tamron17-50mm zoom an would like a lens protector like the tiffen UV filter, but hear that the lens cover will not work after install what should i purchase instead?
ALAN F  You fail to mention how many mm is the lens cap? 17mm is fairly wide angle a uv filter that will screw on the outer end of the lens. At 17mm the inside of the uv filter could be visible when looking through the camera. I have Nikon 18-55 lens that takes a 52mm uv filter. I have no problems with that when zoomed back to wide angle. I don`t see why you should have a problem either.
