No leaks & no troubles

I've owned this housing for over two years. I've followed the manufactures specifications and have not had any trouble. I clean the O ring seal prior to every use. This last week I was in some rough surf and the housing was knocked around on the rocks a few times - hard knocks. No leaks - just scratches. It has made some great underwater video clips that we've edited for family vacations. It's been a great edition to my dive gear.

A sad note for Canon

I would not recommend this housing for underwater use!I have owned several Canon powershot models and there respective housings. I have always been pleased with thair performance in the past.I am sad to say this is not true of the WP-DC8. I have two of these and both leaked from day one! I service my housings everyday and follow the instructions to the letter insuring that they are always assembled in a dry enviroment with freshly cleaned & siliconed seals yet there are always small droplets

I have taken to adding rolled up paper towels inside the case to protect my camera. They have also gone to a cheap snap on diffuser that falls off at the slightest bump.I have an A640 and an A630 [...] and love them both and would reccommend them highly but not there housings

Adequate, could be sturdier

The O-ring will produce pinhole-size leaks if there is the slightest hint of foreign matter on it. This tells me the fit is less than ideal. It must be cleaned and lubricated - get something heavier than the grease that comes with it - every time it is closed, and should be carefully wiped down with a microfiber cloth before greasing. I also suggest a small piece of rolled-up paper towel stuffed under and beside the camera (on the hinge side) to absorb any tiny amounts of water that might get in despite your best efforts. This has already saved my camera once. Still, since the only other option costs about 3 times as much, it is a good investment as long as you're careful and don't get sloppy in maintaining it.

Makes Underwater Photography FUN!

By

This housing is great, it went together well and was easy to use all of the features and controls on the camera. The only thing that was a down side is that it is hard to see the screen in very bright conditions. I love the ease of use with this housing and had more fun taking photos with it than I do with my big bulky housing for my SLR. Can't wait to go diving again so I can take more photos. I took it to 100' and had no problems. Make sure you buy the weights though, they really help with bouyancy while taking the perfect pictures.

Canon WP-DC8 needs something.

The housing is excellent, the controls are excellent and it does not leak but when the sun is above you and the camera is underwater you cannot see the screen. Maybe a polarizer on the back would fix this.

Works well for boating

By

My main use of this housing has been for photography from my kayak. I have tested it in the swimming pool down to six feet, and it was watertight to that depth. I can't evaluate it for scuba divers. As previous reviewer noted, the flash diffuser clips on to the lens barrel housing. A leash keeps it from getting lost. How user friendly or not that is for divers I can't evaluate. As a boater I find it best to just leave it in the box at home. If you want to take wide angle flash pictures with the housing, you will need the diffuser. Without it the lens barrel will cast a shadow in the lower right corner of your picture. With the diffuser flash coverage is very even. Like most housings a wriststrap is provided. Unlike some there are enough loops (total of 3) to allow use of a neckstrap. One is provided, but an aftermarket one will be more comfortable. That's nice to have, as this housing is fairly hefty. Weight is reasonable enough to be adequately comfortable with the neckstrap, and to allow one-handed hold. It's still heavy enough to help improve steadiness. I have used other cameras with light-duty housings, and camera shake was a bigger problem. Like other scuba housings there is a socket which is tripod compatible and which allows for adding weights. Canon sells them separately. For boating they're not needed. Without weight I could hold the camera down for my watertightness test, but divers will definitely want to use them. Ergonomics of the buttons with this camera is very good. Lens is clear enough to get beautiful pictures, although as with any housing I have to keep the waterdrops wiped off. I usually keep a cotton handkerchief in the chest pocket of my PFD, and I keep plenty of extra dry ones in my Seal Pak.
