About this item

The LEICA SF20 dedicated flash unit has been specially designed for the LEICA R8 and the LEICA M6TTL and adds another interesting product to the R and M range of accessories. Its modern design further enhances the attractive appearance of both camera models.

The LEICA SF20 is simple to use and returns consistent results as the flash benefits from the advantages of the TTL metering function on the LEICA R8 and LEICA M6TTL. One of the advantages of this control technology is that correct flash exposure is confirmed immediately in the viewfinder. The additional contacts in the accessory shoe of the LEICA R8/LEICA M6 TTL and the contacts in the adapter foot of the flash unit automatically transfer the data between camera and flash. The film speed (ISO), the f-stop and the exposure override are thus signalled automatically and corresponding adjustment made. In addition, flash readiness and after shooting the correct flash exposure are confirmed. The user can read all the necessary information on the display.

The SF20 can of course also be used on all other LEICA R and M models. For this purpose, it is equipped with its own photocell and a computer control with three stops. In addition, the user can choose to operate the flash manually. However, Leica advises against using the SF20 on cameras of other manufacturers, as the electrical connections may be incompatible and cause malfunctions.

The LEICA SF20 flash is also notable for its compact design and light weight. It has a medium guide number (i.e. 20 for ISO 100) and enables the user to adjust the equipment perfectly to a range of lighting conditions, e.g. by using fill-in flash on the subject in conjunction with the exposure override function or when using the "P" program on the LEICA R8. The user can choose between three different operating modes for the different applications: "TTL", "A" and "M". When the flash is used in TTL mode on the LEICA R8 or LEICA M6TTL, the camera assumes the flash metering function. The photocell in the camera meters the light received through the lens and controls the light output by the flash accordingly. All significant factors influencing the exposure of the film such as filters, aperture and changes in focal length are automatically taken into account when the flash is used in this mode. The "A" mode is particularly useful when the flash is used with other LEICA cameras. This mode allows for three lens apertures: f/2.8, f/5.6 and f/11. In this case, the light output is controlled by the flash unit itself. When the flash is set to "M" the light output remains constant at any given power level, i.e. the flash exposure must be controlled manually by selection of the appropriate aperture on the lens. The LEICA SF20 can also be used for wideangle shots with focal lengths down to 24mm. In this case, the standard wideangle diffuser must be fitted for even coverage of the image.
