The Maxell LTO Ultrium 6 Data Tape Cartridge incorporates a Linear Tape File System, which enables it to be used in a manner similar to that of hard disk drives. It also boasts faster compressed tape drive transfer rate of up to 400 MB/sec and maximum storage capacity of up to 6.25TB. The incorporation of Maxell's NeoSMART (Super Maximum-capacity Advanced Reliability Tape) technology is designed to enhance the benefits of LTO 6 tape. For example, ultra-fine ceramic-armored metal particles augment the LTO 6 cartridge capacity and create an added level of protection from corrosion. The improved magnetic particles, new coating and dispersion technologies, advanced cartridge shell design and the other components of the NeoSMART platform are designed to support tape cartridge capacities in excess of 1 Terabyte.

You will need an LTO 6 drive to read your LTO 6 media. However, the drives are "backwards compatible". Once you upgrade to an LTO 6 drive, it will still be able to read your LTO 5 Tapemedia.
