I purchased and used this bag specifically for a recent trip to TX that was focused on birds (watching/photography). I used the bag to hold: Canon T4i w/battery grip; EF 100-400 f/5.6L IS lens; flash unit w/flash extender; 10x42 binoculars plus accessories (including tripod head with wimberley sidekick for air travel) There wasn't much "extra" room for stuff while using it as a carry-on bag, but is was very spacious once in the field (head now on tripod, carrying binoculars) Overall the bag functions well for it's intended purpose. It is very comfortable to wear.Unlike several other bags that I have tried - it does function well as a photo gear bag as well as a day pack for hiking On the downside: If you are not putting equipment in the padded compartments - there is no other method of organization. There are no pen/pencil holders, no key clip, etc. I found myself having to use small bags to organize items, and this made it more difficult to get things out in the field. It would be really nice if future versions of this bag had pen/pencil slots, a key chain fob, and a small zippered pouch in the smaller front compartment - it would be reassuring to know that my wallet and keys weren't going to fall out when I went to get a snack out (yes, this happened) This size bag is not a "sling bag", so it is difficult to get equipment out without taking the bag off your back. Not totally a downside - just be aware of what you are getting Some of the hardwear used in the straps was difficult to adjust on the fly. The was actually good, because there was no slippage once adjustments were made. However, sometimes I had to take the bag off to make adjustments. One other thing to be aware of - the stiff back makes it hard to slide this bag under an airline seat. It fits, but it's very hard to get in or out during the flight. Again, not totally a bad thing - it's the back that makes it comfortable to wear! I tried attaching my tripod to the bag, and it seemed like it would work just fine. I did not have an opportunity to use this feature in the field though.

Vanguard Kinray 48 backpack (Green/Silver) is uniquely designed for birders and outdoor photographers. It's roomy on the inside with removable dividers to securely hold a spotting scope and DSLR camera for digiscoping or DSLR camera and attached telephoto lens. Durable and weather-resistant, Kinray will protect gear in foul weather. A stowed rain cover provides additional protection.
Large quick access from the front enables fast, organized removal of your gear. It's comfortable, too, with length-adjustable shoulder straps and an adjustable chest harness that provides an impressive fit. Breathable fabric on the back keeps you dry. Kinray converts from a daypack into a backpack, depending on your needs, by simple removal of a thick cushion and other dividers. It can even be used as an everyday backpack by removing all dividers. Kinray also boasts a tripod holder and adjustable upper strap.
Zippered pockets conveniently hold and keep organized small items like snacks, keys, guidebooks, etc. A front strap with karabiner holds small accessories. Two lower front straps hold larger accessories such as sleeping bags or jackets. Smaller accessories such as pouches can be clipped onto the side loops of the bag.
