Great Tripod...

This tripod is absolutely wonderful. The ball head is very nice and smooth and retains its position well with my Canon 50D with battery grip and 70-200 f2.8L attached. The tripod is stable and very user friendly and it has great features. If I were to change anything at all it would be to add an Arca-Swiss style QR to it. The QR knob that is on it works well, but the rubber grip on it slips a little, but that is probably mostly me. I tend to over tighten things and I am very hard on equipment...

Having said that this tripod holds up very well to me and has so far proven itself "Stephen Proof". I have had several tripods from the other big name companies out there, but this is my favorite yet.

Almost Measures Up To Promise

Using this tripod with a 400mm lens to photograph the planets reveals shortcomings that may not be important in other applications. Its legs are sturdy and overall fit and finish are good. However, there is enough "play" between the "shoe" and its receptacle to invite camera shake that can mess up long shots.

Darn good

By

from TX  -  Photo Enthusiast

This tripod was bough for the purpose of night shots, and because it's center support can be flipped 90 degrees. Pros: extremely sturdy- able to support 100-400f2.8 L fully extended QR plate is metal Con: Not for carry to on any hikes- almost 5lbs Ball head is a little stiff and not as smooth as it could be This is not a con, but more of a wish for all the tripod, the levels should be glow-in-dark for easy viewing at night. It should also have accessories mounts for attaching monitors, bags, etc.

a great tripod-ballhead combo!

By

from Portland, OR  -  Photo Enthusiast

I have always skimped on tripods, but Adorama had this pair at a great price. Wow, the things this can do could really improve my imaging especially for closeup work! It's adjustable in so many ways I had to break down and read the manual :^) A great tripod, a great price - thanks Adorama!

Heavy but very sturdy

By

from Montclair, Ca  -  Photo Enthusiast

This was a sale item when I purchased it. The good part of this tripod is the heavy weight it can support, very important when taking landscape images. The only trade-off is the weight of the tripod, it is slightly heavy to carry for any great distance. I would prefer a different head, one with handles but the head on it works just fine. It was a on-sale item and it was well worth it.

Very Satisfied

By

Can't rate reliability because I've only had mine for a week, but after using once in the field, I'm very impressed with this tripod/head combo. It is very sturdy using my Nikon dslr and 300mm lens. It is tall and heavy (which I like)and seems to be made of quality materials. I can't imagine doing better than this at the price I paid. This was my first time buying from Adorama...a flawless buying experience!

Solid tripod at a solid price point

If you can get this tripod on sale, it is well worth the money. It just feels solid in your hand and the adjustability is amazing. It is a bit heavier than I was expecting.

exactly what I expected

By

Overall a very good product. I bought this to replace an old Slik tripod I've been using, and so far I'm very pleased with it. It took me a few minutes to figure out how to use the Multi-Angle Central Column (MACC), but once you do it's very simple. The Manfrotto 190 seems a little easier to engage, but for the money I'd buy another one of the Vanguard's any day. It seems very sturdy, and is plenty tall enough for me at 6'1" so I don't have to bend over. The ballhead is a little stiff at first, but now works great and comes with two quick release plates, saving you another $15. I won't be doing any hiking with it, but didn't expect it to be small and light weight. It does however come with a decent carry case which is just big enough to also carry my Manfrotto mono-pod at the same time. This item was on back order when I purchased it, but the folks at Adorama communicated this and shipping information immediately. Kudos to Adorama for a great customer service experience every single time I shop with them!

Questions about this item:

M G  I'm 6' 2" so, in your opinion, will this tripod allow me to look through my viewfinder without stooping, and without overbalancing the tripod?
DANIEL S  The total height of the tripod at68" is measured with the center column fully extended and shooting like that compromises its stability. Most photoags will recommend that you never extend the column that much. So you will have to stoop to put your eye to the viewfinder. This is however a very sturdy tripod and I would recommend it.
M G  Hi Daniel, thanks for prompt reply. You've pretty much nailed it for me - 68" is then the height of the tripod with centre column raised to its max, but without aTripod Head attached, correct? Throw in the height of a Tripod Head with camera attached, and the viewfinder could then be somewhere around the 72" mark, yay? Then we hit the stability thing you mention... What a minefield! Not at all sure what to do... But thank you for your help, Daniel - good job man!
