I bought this tripod mainly for travel. It is very compact and light, but extends high enough for my height (5'9"). It handles my 40D with 17-70 lens well. The quick release plate is small and a little awkward to attach/detach from the camera. It has a slot head screw which requires use of a coin or the provided tool. I would have wanted a tripod with flip locks for the legs, but settled for the twist and lock mechanism of this tripod due to its shorter length. The flip locks would have been easier to use on uneven ground (legs of different extended lengths). I noticed that one leg (the labeled one)is angled more than the other two, which results in the tripod leaning by about 10deg. When the legs are fully extended, there is some vibration. I don't use the smallest leg section if I need to shoot longer exposures. The single handle is okay for shooting stills, but is too short to use for video panning.

Velbon Ultra Maxi-L Tripod is innovative, modern, compact and ideal for your digital equipment. It features the patented Trunnion Shaft System (TSS). That means each Leg extends the entire inside length of the outer leg casing, making the tripod extremely compact when folded. The Ultra tripods additionally features the unique, Patented Velbon "Twist Lock" leg system - a simple quick twist and pull allows you to extend each leg in on movement. Another twist locks the leg.
The legs of most tripods are joined to the head via bolts through the top of each leg, however the Ultra MAXi incorporates non-piercing bolts: (i.e. each leg extends the entire inside length of the outer leg casing), making the tripod extremely compact when folded. This unique system is called the Trunnion Shaft System (TSS). Suitable for most compact digital cameras and camcorders.
