Vivitar DF-483 Flash

By

from NH  -  Photo Enthusiast

The DF-483 flash was sent to me by Vivitar because I've been having some compatibility issues using the 583 on my Nikon. The brightness would have to be jacked up to 3.0 each time the 583 was turned on to get results worth keeping. The default setting was not adjustable and made it somewhat of a pain although I feel the 583 is the better made flash. This DF-483 has only been tested in my home so far but seems to be a much better match for my Nikon D3000. It will be used mostly in night clubs and lounges taking pictures of music bands under low/colored light. I will also use it to photograph family members. I want to thank Vivitar for their above average, friendly customer service and especially Thomas the phone tech.

Questions about this item:

Shopper  Why Did You Choose This?
YSA A  I actually returned this model after being disappointed in its construction. Namely, the locking mechanism for the hot shoe, it's not the normal tightening (circular) screw down and pretty flimsy.
Roman L  The Vivitar DF483 states high speed synch. Does this unit synch above 1/250 sec.?
ILIAN K  Yes, it does! And it works! But keep in mind - this is a low end shoe mount flash.
Roman L  Hi Ilian, Thanks for the reply. I have the DF383 and the workhorse analog 283 which use both on and off camera. I would like to see these additional features on this unit: 1) a metal foot, and 2) a provision to keep the unit from shutting down after 3 minutes(especially when you are moving the set around, or waiting for your model to change for the next shot). All in all, I have had favorable results with both units and I am considering the purchase of an additional flash. Thanks again, Roman
Shopper  I have a d5100 and wanted to know if this 483 has a eye trigger / optical slave, meaning if it can be used off camera and fired by the built in flash?
YSA A  Hi, in theory yes, it can work as a slave using your on camera flash (built in or attached) as the master. I personally never tried it as I re-sold mine almost immediately after buying since I had so many problems with Vivitar products and wasn't willing to deal with the hassle anymore.
